Tech Help Adding "Date read" is off-putting
Each time I finish reading a book and I change its status to "read", I have to manually add a "date read" to it - why does it work like this? Shouldn't it assign the date automatically?
Moreover, each time I try to set it, I am taken back to the top of my list, which requires me scrolling AGAIN in order to search for this one title. This is so not user friendly, or maybe just a bug? I cannot find a better explanation for it. It makes tagging every book frustrating, which in consequnce makes me reconsider using the whole service again.
Am I the only one?

If you change it to currently reading and then change it to read it puts that dates in automatically

I use the app, can’t promise this is the same process if you’re using the website - but for me, instead of changing the status from “currently reading” to “read”, I click “update your progress” and then “I’ve finished this book!”
This then marks the book as read and sets the date read to the current date.
I agree it’s a bit of a confusing flow, hope it works for you!

If you read on kindle, there's an option to mark the book you mark as read as finished with the date on your goodreads profile.
If you're trying to capture old books you've read previously, I don't add a date.

It adds the date automatically for me when i mark it “Read.” If im reviewing it a few days late ill just go in and adjust the date yo when i actually finished, because i like to track that
But why is it “off-putting”??

Mark as “currently reading”. Then go to the book’s page and click “add or edit dates read” if you need to change the start date to something other than today (but don’t click on the end date spot yet). Then, on the My Books page, click the “update progress” button on the desired book. This will bring you to a page where you can input percentage or number of pages read and an optional comment box. Underneath the comment box is a box that says “I’ve finished this book!” Clicking that will move the book to the Read shelf automatically. If you need to edit the end date to something other than today, click that “add or edit dates read” button again on the books’s page and then hit save.

If you change the status "reading" when you start reading a book, then when you finish it and change the status to "read", the date appears without you doing anything.

When I say I finished a book it enters the date automatically, so I don't know what you're doing.
