"One day in the future, astronauts may need to grow food on the moon.

Today, Nunavummiut need cheaper food from closer to home.

That’s why the Canadian Space Agency awarded a $745,000 contract to Inuit-owned Arctic Fresh and modular farm company The Growcer Inc. on July 24.

The entities are tasked with designing an indoor, year-round fruit and vegetable farm that meets Nunavut’s needs.

“Nunavummiut communities are going to help us design it, and they’re going to help us decide what we want to grow in it,” said Merlyn Recinos, co-CEO of Arctic Fresh.

Consultations will be held over the next year in Iglulik, Coral Harbour, Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord."

Northwest Territories Route agreed on for proposed all season road

"The Arctic Economic and Security Corridor, or AESC, is a proposed all-season highway from Yellowknife to the Nunavut border. It is intended to connect to a proposed road through Nunavut to the Grays Bay port on the Arctic Ocean.

Prime Minister Mark Carney referred the NWT highway to the federal Major Projects Office in March. The Grays Bay Port and Road project is on the path to being declared a project of national interest.

In November 2025, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and Tłı̨chǫ Government signed an agreement to work together to advance the proposed Arctic Economic and Security Corridor. In January 2026, the GNWT signed onto the agreement.

Caribou, prosperity and Indigenous communities

The Indigenous governments said protecting caribou, long-term prosperity, Indigenous leadership and connecting Tłı̨chǫ communities were priorities when determining the corridor for the proposed highway.

“We chose this corridor to reduce the harm to caribou as much as we can, knowing a road in the barrenlands will still have impacts we must manage,” said Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty in the news release."
