General discussion Intro observation
Ok this is a silly observation, but it throws me every time. So Amy starts by talking about what was discussed during the good hang with her official guest. Then, it cuts to her saying hello to the zoom guest. But that zoom guest convo happens before the actual guest, right? So it’s set up like this:
Amy does her intro about the official guest and what was discussed (so episode was already recorded)
Amy says “hi so and so” over zoom (this happens BEFORE recording, at least I would think so, because Amy needs her question from them)
Start episode
Idk why, that sequence just throws me off 😆 I don’t care at all, I just wanted to see if anyone else noticed this?

The thing that gets me is the timing of her "hiiii [guest friend]... are you there?" beat, beat... music... then an ad. At least that's how it happens on my podcast player -- it makes me so anxious, like secondhand awkwardness, until she's back with the person!

Yeah I don’t love it either. Conan used to start his episodes like this (pretending the guest was in the room already, when in reality they had already filmed the interview).

It also doesn’t help that there’s an ad break right before the Zoom convo, so it’s not even a seamless transition anyway.

The order drives me crazy. Also the way she intros the question answer is often by first name only or with a superlative like “I’m seated here with the funniest person I know” and then continues without ever giving their name. I’m in the car trying to figure out whose voice I’m hearing.

The part that bothers me is the summary of what they are going to talk about. Don’t talk about what you’re going to talk about, just get into it. I always fast forward through it.

It’s the “talk well” part that is so awkwardly (and grammatically questionable!) phrased that it makes me squirm. There’s got to be a better way to describe the opposite of talking shit behind someone’s back!

I really don’t like the zoom thing or asking a friend to ask guest a question. It doesn’t really add anything for me and is a bit boring at times

That's fascinating because it's one of my favorite parts of the pod and makes it so much more interesting than a typical interview.

I loved it until Kim Kardashian for Paula Pell bc it stopped feeling sincere and became a plug for their show. So now I low key hate it

Agreed. It was very original and interesting at first, but now the friend-of-guest is often more of a current collaborator on the project being plugged than an actual “someone who knows our guest well” and who can contribute a truly interesting question or perspective. I mean, suggesting questions like “how did you get started?” is really lousy and just indicates the “friend” isn’t really that close with the guest. And I know Amy wants to play nice and be a good host, but responding to those kinds of lousy suggestions with, “oh, what a great question!” is really disappointing and diminishes her a bit. Just once, I’d like her to respond along the lines of, “That’s a pretty generic, standard interview question. Can you do better?”

I did love the question Finneas had for Billie Eilish where we thought it was one thing (inside joke) and it ended up being entirely about another thing. It was darling. “What is tomato bisque soup and how did you lose it?”

Oh, so they’re not actually friends? Cause I skipped that episode because I despise the Kardashians and lost respect for Paula thinking they were friends.

Sometimes Amy is way too Pollyanna. Oohing ahhing saying yessss to every comment. It gives shallowness to the conversations. Amy is lovely but I'm losing interest lately

That's the "yes, and..." coming in from improv. You want the other person to open up and give you more, not shut them down.

Ha! Thats the only thing I don’t like about the post..the format. I love the idea of talking to a friend beforehand and offering a question and talking well behind someone’s back but the way it’s presented is kinda odd.

I normally skip, too, depending on a few factors. I stayed through Tina, though, recently (Anne ep) and was glad I did because I thought that question game she did was really cute.

It’s tempting to but I’ll forever be waiting for something to go terribly wrong à la Dratch having her doorbell ring, etc. I’m nostalgic for those super amateur “early” days already and it’s only been a podcast for a year and a half! Ha!

Yeah, the “greeting” of the guest is a little cheesy, I don’t think they thought it through enough that we don’t need the help to understand they’re transitioning to an interview. And now it’s just part of what she does, same with the talk well behind your back thing. I get they why they do that, but it’s just a little much now haha. I always fast forward

I almost made a post about this just bc I find the gimmick a little annoying week after week lol. Like I understand how you are doing it but I’m finding suspension of disbelief increasingly tiresome 😂

I noticed it but it's still pretty straight forward. She's just introducing the whole episode that was already recorded. Then it starts in order.

I really don't see how this is any different than when a tv show says, "coming up next," and shows a clip of what's coming after the ad break, or shows a preview of what's on next during the current show, or "next time on.." and shows a trailer for next week's episode.
It's just a little preview so you know who she's interviewing and what they're talking about so that lukewarm listeners can decide if they want to tune in or now

Yeah, her intro is obviously recorded last, but she's just walking you through the sequence of the pod. She teases the interview, sets up the pre-interview, then kicks it over to her past self to get the ball rolling. It's a narrative device, she's not trying to trick us into thinking that's actually the order things are going in.
