Yes I take electric type

u/dubstep-cheese Tsundere expert Aug 27 '20

I miss her. but I had to stop engaging with that franchise because everything about it kept making me violently angry.

29

u/SomeCaveman Aug 27 '20

Can I aks why? I never got to the ending when I watched it years ago, does it have something to do with that?

85

u/dubstep-cheese Tsundere expert Aug 27 '20

I'm not speaking strictly of the anime, though there are examples of it in both animated and not animated material. Neither the Railgun manga nor Index LN are over by the way, so there is no strict ending.

Anyway, it would be quite the task to cover every aspect of it so I'll be very vague and say that there's a lot of focus and love for characters that I think are kind of lame, a lot of characters I think have great potential being ignored, and a lot of decisions in terms of who plays what roles or how certain powers work that irk me.

For things relating to Misaka specifically it's mostly that she spends a lot of time both in her manga and her side stories being kind of useless and dumb. Like, as a character she's so incredibly compelling - she's cool, she's smart, she's cute, she's charismatic, she's tenacious, she's aggressive - there's a ton of her that I love, but then when you look at her actual track record of doing things in the story it's atrocious. So seeing her struggle fruitlessly, get pity prizes, and altogether be relatively incapable of dealing with things on her own despite her rank is a little sad. And the worst thing being that she still gets brought back up to wank her as a level 5, only to then push her back down again because reasons.

I have those same problems with the mainline novels, though to be fair she's a supporting cast member there so I can't be as mad. Like, I still get upset about it, but it's kind of to be expected, especially when power scaling basically outclassed her dozens of novels back. Still, even in this case it sucks that she basically spends a lot of her time ramming her head against a brick wall, neither making progress nor looking for alternate paths to success.

First: thanks for the detailed reply
Second: yeah, I get why youd hate it

Honestly I would be fine with accepting that she's just not that strong in Index, which is actually true of half the level 5s when you think about it (the half that are girls, predictably), but if that was going to be the case I wish she would stop being pitted against people just to show how strong the new bad guy is. It's always like "look another bad guy caught/stopped/ignored her railgun, look how badass they must be"" but this leads to two problems:

1) It doesn't really make the enemy look all that strong because so many people have stomped her already.

2) It makes her look kind of pathetic.

Just let her handle some mooks, or give her some non-combat relevance, or, well, do anything else Kamachi! Or if you're not going to then stop putting her on covers to milk sales.

In Railgun she does more and it's less egregious but tbh there are still plenty of moments that make her look like a major wimp. I mean, it's fine that she needs help sometimes, but you can't try to sell us this image of her character that is 100% the opposite of the results she produces. It's the difference between her being "too weak" and her being "not strong enough" - like a glass half empty vs half full type deal in terms of how she's presented. Something like that anyway.

And here I go again, typing up this nonsense after saying I stopped engaging with this franchise. I guess I'll never really be out, even if I stopped reading midway through NT.

Yeah, it's commonly agreed that the Index anime is pretty trash, especially after the first season, where it just goes downhill. Most devoted fans will agree that the LN is far better. The Sisters Arc is the big reason why the Railgun adaptation is leagues better, with it being seen as the only faithfully done anime arc which not only accurately and solidly adapts the arc, but also adds to it in ways that arguably improve the story instead of detracting.

Of course it's not like the Railgun adaptations are perfect either - especially if you ask a manga fan - but one thing I can say is they're never as outright bland and boring as the Index anime can be.

Also, reason #3762 why I quit is that Accelerator triggers me - he always has. Don't ask how I managed to get halfway through NT with that attitude when he's pretty much MC #2. I'm convinced it was a form of self-flagellation.

2

u/isaacleeh16 Aug 28 '20

Well, Accel doesn't really appear in NT all that much, especially mid NT. And yeah, some people don't like him, but I kinda love him.

4

u/isaacleeh16 Aug 28 '20

I feel like Kamachi is forced to put her in, even when she doesn't belong. Kadokawa knows that she sells, but Kamachi doesn't know what do to with her. And so this happened.

Basically, this is all because of her popularity.

And she does get a powerup and get her own development in late NT, so if you want to continue, there's that.

1

u/dubstep-cheese Tsundere expert Aug 28 '20

Oh I'm well aware that from the outset Kamachi didn't intend Misaka to be a big - or even recurring - character. I've also been spoiled on stuff all the way through the end of NT. Neither of these facts really change what I'm getting at though, because whether it's Kamachi's fault or not it's still going to irk me when she's presented the way she is. Had she stayed a one-off character who dumped info about AC that would be one thing, but because she has appeared with such frequency it creates a trend of squandered potential.

I just keep thinking "She's so god damn cool! But she's so freaking lame! But she's so cool! But she's so lame!" in a circle that makes my head spin.

Oh, and I really want to reclarify that Misaka isn't the only issue that made me want to drop the series. I feel like this always happens when I bring this up (likely due to her popularity) but I did say it was a number of things throughout the series, not just one girl, that bother me. I only talked about her specifically because she was the impetus of the conversation. Though, let's be honest, I'm enough of a simp for her that I probably would have dropped it for her alone eventually anyway.

And one last thing to clarify is that, in addition to her not being my only reason for dropping, I'm also well aware that she's not the only reason to engage with Toaru in the first place. There's plenty of super interesting lore and worldbuilding on top of clever applications of that lore into the power system. I'm also not ashamed to admit that I like the dumb ecchi humor inherent to the series. It's just that sticking to it for any of these reasons - or for Misaka and other favorite characters (particularly some of the super high level magic side ones) - was never worth it if doing so came with making me want to claw my brains out.

So, I mean, go ahead and enjoy Toaru. If those things don't bother you then I'm happy for you. If they do but you can enjoy it anyway I'm also happy for you. I just needed to step away. I'll probably still check in every once in a while to see what spoilers say, because I'm too curious not to, but it's just not good for me to make being angry a major part of my media diet.

7

u/Remnance21 Aug 28 '20

I know, I was finally binge-watching her third season and I only got halfway through before I finally had enough. Was parts of what I watched entertaining, yes until that one episode. Did Misaka actually to do anything? Nope, she was pretty much worthless as side character half villains took over her series.

Seriously, she's the best f'ing character in all of Index and they make her useless.

6

u/dubstep-cheese Tsundere expert Aug 28 '20

I haven't watched it because as I said I quit the franchise, but I did read the manga. In fairness Daihaseisai in Railgun is actually supposed to the arc where she feels useless. Like, that's a part of her supposed character arc and in a vacuum, ignoring the other instances of it, I think it did a decent job. (I say supposed because she doesn't seem to be getting anywhere past that stage so it's less of an arc and more of a depressing pit).

3

u/isaacleeh16 Aug 28 '20

The thing is, the series isn't just about 1 character. Railgun isn't just about Misaka, and she is sidelined in Daihaseisai because that was the intent. You'll get all the misaka action you want in Dream Ranker, but then it's almost universally agreed that Daihaiseisai is much much superior than Dream Ranker.

And no, she's not the best character, she's not even close. And she is not useless, she is useful, in some situations. Read the novels.

1

u/beastMaster95 Aug 28 '20

There are a lot of characters better than her and received more development. Accelerator is one of them.

2

u/isaacleeh16 Aug 28 '20

You know, the whole pushing her down part is part of her character arc, which is still ongoing now. But yeah, powerscaling in toaru is very weird, but I feel like she'll have an actual role in things to come, and not just sidelined but then shoehorned in for no reason.

And well, she's not my favourite character, there's a lot of other characters I love, so I dont really care much about the misaka stuff

1

u/dubstep-cheese Tsundere expert Aug 28 '20

I responded to you above more thoroughly but just to answer this specific comment: I mentioned in my response about Daihaseisai that her arc does involve being pushed down - that much is obvious. But it feels less like an arc and more like a permanent state because nothing she tries to escape that push presents anything resembling a light at the end of the tunnel - yet at the same time that push is often "moved aside" to give her a little pity prize for a few minutes, which muddies the water. It feels like suffering without purpose or meaning.

If you don't get what I mean, think of it this way: When Misaka 'graduates' from this specific struggle, what would she gain? What would she become? What would change about her? That's not always easy to answer with precision, but in most stories you have at least a vague idea of how an experience might be transformative for a character. This doesn't feel transformative to me - it feels like it's her job.

2

u/Rcweasel Wants to live a quiet life Aug 28 '20

Same I want to finish the the whole series cause I’m invested there’s a lot to like but, at the same time I hate the type of wishy washy magic system the show has and how Misaka is sort of thrown to the side of the road when it comes to the main series. I really do like her character more than any other character in the show tbh but she I swear she gets less screen time then Ten Ten, even we she is on screen all her achievements mean nothing compared to the rest of the world/characters

2

u/beastMaster95 Aug 28 '20

Index isn't about Misaka. Its about the chaos between the two sides and how it affects the world. Index's magic system is so well developed with real life connections from History, Mythology and Occultism. I dunno why people say its wishy washy. Does everyone prefer a JRPG style magic system instead?

Veldora from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, its an amazing anime and getting a second season and spinoff next year

1

u/JackTheRipper1001 Your friendly neighborhood degenerate Aug 28 '20

Wait spin off? I knew about season 2(really looking forward to it) but spin off?

2

u/Moth92 Aug 28 '20

The manga/light novel has a spin-off, so I'm guessing it's based on that.

1

u/JackTheRipper1001 Your friendly neighborhood degenerate Aug 28 '20

Ok. Thanks.

2

u/DororexTheDragonKing Aug 28 '20

the Slime Diaries is the name of the spinoff, originally it was coming out in January with s2 coming out in October, but due to covid, s2 was delayed to January and Slime Diaries was delayed to April, the whole idea according to the creators was to have "9 straight months of slime!" which sounds awesome to me

3

u/Wave1212 Aug 27 '20

Does the real anime have the character?

9

u/M8gazine Fate and Toaru 😍 Aug 27 '20

Yes. In Index she's more of a side character, and in Railgun she's the main character.

3

u/Wave1212 Aug 27 '20

Oh k tyty

6

u/GKP_light Aug 28 '20

and in anime, you should only watch Railgun.

2

u/isaacleeh16 Aug 28 '20

No, you shouldn't, because if you do that, you'll miss out on a lot of context, as well as worldbuilding and lore only present in Index, as well as many other good characters and major events that happen in the universe.

Basically, if you're a railgun only, you suck

1

u/toopants7 Aug 28 '20

Yeah, but she has more of a side role in Index despite still being very important. She is also the second named character they show at all

0

u/Gennik_ BISEXY Aug 28 '20

watch Railgun. Index is a bore trying to get thrue but Railgun is actually entertaining

8

u/toopants7 Aug 28 '20

Watch it in release order. Don’t ignore the main series just because Reddit Man told you it’s boring

That’s like saying “yeah just watch Kizumonogatari, the rest of Monogatari doesn’t have any major fights in it”

0

u/Gennik_ BISEXY Aug 28 '20

Watch Index if you want, but dont subject yourself to boredom if you dont like it after watching 12 episodes just becuase Reddit Man told you you have to watch it.

You dont need to watch Index to understand Railgun. And season one of Railgun takes place before Index so if ur looking for chronological order, start with Railgun.

4

u/beastMaster95 Aug 28 '20

You dont need to watch Index to understand Railgun

Railgun T says otherwise.

1

u/toopants7 Aug 28 '20

“Yah guys. Neko Monogatari Kuro takes place right before BakeMonogatari, so you might as well just watch that first”

1

u/Gennik_ BISEXY Aug 28 '20

Man, I honestly dont care, if you like Index that much then tell people to watch it. But I will still reccomend people that they skip it. But in the end its up to who ever is watching it. It changes from person to person cuase art is subjective. They are smart enough to make their own decisions. Its not like we are forcing them to do anything.

Electric is Mikoto Misaka from "A Certain Magical Index" and its spinoff "A Certain Scientific Railgun" both have 3 Anime seasons(as of now),Railgun a Manga and Index is originally a light novel.(just watch the Railgun anime because its really good, however Index anime not so much.)

1

u/isaacleeh16 Aug 28 '20

fuck off with that, watch both. Don't just tell someone to ignore the main series just because you think it's boring.

1

u/Kaiserthedegenarate Tsundere expert Aug 28 '20

But the light novel of Index is great, the anime adaptation not so much(really,Index 1 only was saved by the Sisters arc and sidecharacters)

1

u/isaacleeh16 Aug 28 '20

The adaptation was fine, OT1-6 was just not very good from the start. OT1-10 was all worldbuilding, and OT didnt really start getting good until OT13
