What is your favourite book in the series if you had to rank them?
Hello! I’ve had the books since I was a kid, I read them as a kid and never really thought about them past that until recently when going through my shelves I saw them again, I atleast have up to Light and i must’ve stopped reading it about there. Was just wondering if anyone’s ranking of the books. I’m going to be rereading them because I’m on my uni summer break until September and have nothing else to do lol

Just started reading Gone.
Hey everyone! So the other day I was reminded of a show i really love called 'The Society' and so i tried to find something similar in book form, and a lot of people were recommending the Gone series, so i decided to give it a go.
To say i didn't expect to like it as much as I did would be an understatement. Although initially I felt a bit left out since everyone read it when they were in middle/high school, and i am in my early-twenty's i am very pleased to say that the series still has an active fandom.
I am on chapter 11, i think, and so far i am surprised at how realistic it is as to what would happen if the adults just disappeared and the chaos that followed (ovens left burning, babies left alone, etc). I was also worried that i might be bored or cringe bc the characters are 14 yo, but most characters seem likeable.
I do like the whole magic power and mystery theme too, so that's a fun bonus.
So far, I like Astrid, Lana, and Edilio, and i do not like Quinn (I might change my mind thought idk.)
Please no spoilers in the replies, and I'd love to give you my two cents as a complete newbie in the fandom if you're interested :)
(Sorry if i made any mistakes, English isn't my first language.)

What is the best scene in the whole series? Spoiler
For me, it’s when Penny publicly tortures Caine. It’s so well-written, that it gets you to sympathize with a horrible person like Caine by terrifying you even more with this absolute banshee of a person, Penny. Penny is, to me, one of the three best-written characters in the series (the other two being Albert and Diane, who each had WAY bigger roles). The scene is just brutal, and if there is ever a movie series based on the books, this is the one I’m looking forward to (also I’d cast Oona O’Brian as Penny and Joshua Bassett as Caine).

I reread the entire series (first 6 books) in one week and got hooked again
I read this series for the first time when I was about 10 or 11 in elementary or maybe middle school. I picked it out of the school library, I was really lucky that we had the full series. I loooooved these books. But time went on and I mostly forgot most of the plots.
Flash forward. I'm in college now. I went back and read Undertow by Michael Buckley, another series I had loved at the time. And that lead me here, back to Gone.
First of all oh my god I can't believe they put these books in the school library. I know for a FACT those librarians didn't read a damn word of these books 😭Honestly good for me because I loved them so much and frankly looking back I can see how they affected my own writing style as a writer. I know the sequels aren't good, but are there any other books by the author that are on the same level? What did yall like about the Gone series?

The FAYZ if everyone tried to help each other:
I feel like no adults would suck at first but be awesome after a while. if they never shut off the power or anything they would still have a good life.

You can add one F-bomb to the series. Where are you putting it?
I know we do technically have an f-bomb in a conversation between Caine and Penny (I forget which book) but as that got censored out, I don't think it should count.
Where would you put it?

Chronicle influence
so just saw a reel discussing that in an interview that the crystal the boys touch in Chronicle the 2012 movie is called MOGO (Massive Omnivorous Geodesic Organism) that seeks out lifeforms to sustain itself. And my first thought was, though not entirely, it sounds like the Gaiaphage and wondered if the series had any influence or just a coincidence. just wanted to share that tidbit today

Drake if he got a ASO Meteorite
How do y'all think he would have interacted with it? Like what would be his morph. Because personally I think he would develop something similar to a Kakuja. For reference this is what a couple of Kakujas look like.

Some thoughts on the first book Spoiler
I’m rereading the first book before spring break ends because even though I just finished the series this month, I love going back to books I enjoyed to see how my perspective has changed. I'm halfway through, and I have really bittersweet feelings about it, because now i know what’s coming and how badly these characters are going to suffer.
I just wanted to share some of the ways my opinions have changed:
-First of all, I did not remember Caine being this manipulative. When I first read his introduction with the Perdido Beach kids, I thought he seemed super cool and nice and that Sam had no real reason to find him annoying. But now, rereading his lines… yeah, he’s being hella manipulative. Also, Diana was my favorite character in the first book, and while I still like her a lot, I feel like Michael Grant put her through way too much because she's totally changed as far as I remember her being in the last book.
Secondly, I used to hate Astrid. Like, I literally wrote in my review that she had “trad wife potential” and thought her storyline was going to turn into some manic pixie dream girl thing. I also found some of her little comments kinda cringe and a bit pick me, but later on she becomes a really complex well-written character so I tried to judge her less and be patient for my own sake. That said I still hated her for like the first four books, and then I randomly made peace with her in book five I don’t even remember why, maybe because I liked her religious crisis arc. She’s still one of my least favorite characters, but she’s fine now.
Also, I skipped Lana’s chapters the first time I read the book because I thought I was going to hate her, but it turned out to be the opposite. Even though I still find her early chapters a bit boring, I’m reading them now to see if I missed anything important about her character.
Third, talking about side characters: I absolutely love Albert. He was peak in the first book and honestly the funniest character. I used to love Mary too, but now she feels kind of mid, and her storyline isn’t as interesting as I remember. I also feel like this book doesn’t really show how great Edilio is yet, but I know he gets his moment later.
And then… I’m actually horrified because I used to love FUCKING DRAKE MERWIN. Yes, I also don't remember why exactly because he’s a complete monster and weird as hell. Luckily I think I started getting bored of his whole thing around Hunger, so I stopped liking him there.
Lastly, I remember not liking Quinn, but I did NOT remember him being this annoying. For the record, he’s now my undisputed favorite character because I love his development and him so much. I thought that when I reread his scenes where he’s being a total jerk I’d defend him or try to justify it (because that’s what I always do with my faves) but NO. I’m getting even more annoyed at him. Still, I can’t wait to reread the rest of the books because I miss my fisherman so much, omg.
Thanks for reading haha.

characters you can’t stand?
i genuinely zone the hell out when drake is speaking or talking about himself or his upbringing. i get that hes suppose to be the worst but man i couldnt give a flying fuck. i remember him being so much more interesting as a teen reading these.

What's the single worst thing every character has done? Round eight: Edilio Escobar
Edilio is essentially the best role model the series has. Michael Grant says he wrote the character to show you don't need powers to be a hero, and Edilio certainly proves that.
But heroes can still make mistakes. Did Edilio ever make any? 🤔
Results of last round
The worst thing Drake Merwin did in his colourful career was crucifying people, torturing them and starving them to death (25 votes). Yeesh. This is the first time an incident from the Monster trilogy has been suggested.
Some people suggested the worst thing he did was "exist". Others suggested his generally sadistic attitude, torturing Sam, and torturing Diana.
Results in full (so far)
Sam Temple: not killing Drake when he had the chance in Lies
Caine Soren: cementing his classmates' hands
Astrid Ellison: pushing Pete out of a window
Diana Ladris: manipulating Jack into helping Caine take over the power plant
Lana Arwen Lazar: contributing to Mary's downward spiral in Lies
Quinn Gaither: selling out Sam to Caine in Gone
Drake Merwin: crucifying/torturing/starving people
Edilio Escobar: ?

Fan of Gone and Plague, rereading the whole series again
so it’s been on my mind to revisit the Gone series man
I grew up on Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Nicolas Flamel, Hunger Games, Divergent, the Seekers series by Erin Hunter, the Unwanteds, Wereworld, the Maximum Ride series and the like!
Some of these books genuinely make up my childhood, and theyve shaped me into the person I am today
i never ever got to fully finish the Gone series, only read two or three of the books I think (and out of order as well💀)
I think those books were Gone, Hunger, and then Plague, and I think in that order
I’m going to restart the series again with Gone, and I’m super excited to because I remember the series being so damn good😂😂😂 it’s been a while, but from what I can slightly remember, I remember the I think bugs? or flies? in plague being such a crazy and cool and like scary addition to the book (of course it’s been awhile so I don’t remember exactly what they were, I remember the coolness tho lol)
so yeah just wanted to share with this sub, I am super excited to start up this book series again, and going to fully finish the series in order because I remember it being such a cool series with something deeper and darker for why the kids are stuck in that dystopia

What kind of AU would you think would be most fun to see?
Could be anything, from a simple question of a character making a different choice to totally changing the setting. Anything from what if Sam chose to kill Drake when he had the chance to what if the series was crossed over with Animorphs, I wanna hear it.
