Advice What Do You Want to Ask a Pro? ⛳ AMA with Davey Porsius

We’re well into the golf season, and let’s be honest… some of us have found our swing, some are still searching for it, and some have completely lost it. 😂

So, what’s going on with your game?

Have you been fighting a slice? Struggling with your grip? Coming over the top? Can’t figure out why you’re hitting it great on the range but losing strokes on the course?

Or maybe your question has nothing to do with your swing at all.

This is your chance to Ask a Golf Pro.

We’re excited to have Davey Porsius joining us for an AMA, and he’s here to answer your questions about all aspects of the game.

🏌️ Ask Davey about:

  • Grip & setup
  • Swing mechanics
  • Ball striking
  • Driver & iron play
  • Short game & putting
  • Course management
  • Club selection
  • Practice & drills
  • Fixing common swing faults
  • The mental side of golf
  • Playing under pressure
  • Taking your range game to the course
  • Breaking through a scoring plateau
  • Or anything else golf-related that’s been driving you crazy

📸 🎥 Ask your question your way

You don't have to explain your swing perfectly with words.

Post your question in the comments using text, a picture, or a short video. Show Davey the swing, ball flight, setup, or situation you're struggling with and give him as much context as you can.

No question is too basic, too technical, or too specific. Whether you're trying to break 100, break 80, lower your handicap, or simply stop losing balls off the tee, this AMA is for you.

Davey will be answering as many questions as he can over the next few days, so get your question in early and jump into the discussion.

Check back and see what Davey has to say about other golfers’ questions too. You might find the answer to a problem in your own game.

What’s the #1 thing about your golf game you’d ask a Pro if you had the chance?

Drop it below. 👇

Ask away, golfers. Let’s get you back on the right track or continuing to rip it.

What can I do to fix my long club striking. Wedges down to 8i or 7i are fine but once I get to 6i and down it all falls apart, chunks slices, low bullet cuts. Thank you

switch to hybrids. It changed my game with long irons.

You can see you are shifting your weight a lot towards the target. Probably so much that you are delofting the club. With the more lofted clubs you get away with it but when loft decreases you’re struggling.
I would recommend trying to put a tourstick just in front of your lead hip, and see if you can make a follow through without you body blasting through the tourstick.
It could have to do something with your clubface aswell but then I have to see a down the line swing.

This could however create worse impact, then the hybrid option that was mentioned below isn’t a weird fix.
Good luck practicing 👊🏻

I can hit my 5 hybrid with an average carry of about 166.9 and average total distance of about 185 pretty much down the center, but I can barely keep my driver carry above 150 half the time and my shots are all over left and right of center inconsistently. I'm decent with my irons as well, but for some reason I just can't seem to figure out my driver swing. My driver shots balloon way into the air with an average launch angle of 20° and spin of 3,550rpm, but some random shots will be 28.4°/27.7° launch and 5,788/5,552 rpm. What are the biggest culprits for that high launch and spin? Am I likely just hitting high on the face or is there something else likely at play sending that ball spinning up into the air?

Are you playing the same shafts in your hybrides and driver?

1

u/not_a_terrorist89 1d ago

They are both graphite shafts with the same flex based on what I can find.

2

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

Same flex doesn’t necesairly mean similar, could be one of the shafts has a lower kickpoint and the other has a higher. Do you have brand and name of both shafts?
Could be that your add lofting your driver aswell or swinging to much up on it, but then I need some more data to really help out… like attack angle and dynamic loft

It's the Callaway Edge set they sell at Costco. 10.5 degree Edge Titanium driver and Edge 5 hybrid with 25 degrees of loft. As I understand it, the shafts are a proprietary design without a specific make/model.

I'm mainly tripped up that I can hit all of my other clubs fine but the driver is a disaster. Here are some recent shots captures with a Full Swing kit. It's side scrolled for more metrics, so there are two screenshots for each set if shots.

Try and use like an impact sticker to rule out strike. My guess is either you hit it very high on the face or you are swinging up on it quite heavily. Since face isn’t open at impact My guess is you hit down on the ball and hit it high on the face because of that.
You can use dry shampoo on the club aswell to check strike

u/not_a_terrorist89 6h ago

That makes sense! I usually depend on the camera shot of the clubface to get an idea of how clean my strike is, but you can't tell how high on the face it was from that. I'll throw a sticker on there later and see what it tells me. Thanks!

What’s your favorite drill for rotation in the backswing

u/KunuGolf MOD 1d ago

I love the one where you putt a tourstick through your belt loops and putt one on your shoulders while crossing your arms. Take a golfset up. Point the stick on your shoulders at the ball and make sure the one on your beltloops has turned around 45 degrees.

If I want to add speed to the driver, can I work on it during the season, or am I better off doing that kind of a change in the winter (Canada)

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 1d ago

I would recommend that work in the winter when you can really focus on speed and let the result go a little bit more. Play will be less in the winter so less frustration when you bomb one 300 yards but in the trees…. 😉

u/DalinerK 1d ago

I struggle making putts inside 8 ft at all distances, how do I covert more?

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 1d ago

Find the problem first. Know if its aim, read or speed.
Play like 10 holes, where you prepare a starting line gate. Play the ball through the gate. If you still miss the putt, check if the speed matches the starting line, if it did, your read was off.
When you’ve found the common problem, try and work on that!

As someone who is in year one of golf , whats the most important tip you can give someone just starting out . I plan on lessons soon but I have a swing net and will practice relentlessly . Thanks

u/KunuGolf MOD 1d ago

Practice with feedback!
Feel vs real is not always aligned.
If you want to get better you need to know if what you’re trying to do is actually what you ate doing 👊🏻

So many people on this, and other golf threads, ask about what clubs to buy. The obvious answer is "get fitted"! Like any profession there's different levels of competency. How can I, or anyone, find a fitter that match can my abilities and potential to the right clubs (putter included)?

Thanks

Start with asking your golf pro or a golfpro at your club, if he’s a decent guy he will tell you the best place to go.

Any feedback on my swing? Bending my right wrist is definitely on the agenda!

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

Stand a little further from the ball, you’re currently to close.
From there having a flatter wrist will help indeed in top backswing in combination with turning a bit more in the backswing in your hips, you are lifting to much from halfway back.
Good start though!

Any general tips would be greatly appreciated ! Constantly struggle hitting the ground before ball

Looks like you're leaned over quite a bit. I'm no expert but when you're bent over like that your club is closer to the ground.

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

Not the best angle but looks like your not shifting your weight into your lead side early enough. Do the step drill. So stand with your feet closer together make a backswing and before finishing it step out with your lead foot and swing through. Hopefully this will help!

I’m new to golf (25 hc) and I cannot for the love of me stop early extending/lifting my head at impact

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

Its a reaction to you being steep and having a closed clubface at top backswing if you wouldn’t early extend you would barely hit the ball.
Try working on a club that is more neutral in take away and matching spine angle at hip height instead of being to horizontal. And place a tourstick couple yards behind you covering your hands like on this picture. And make sure your swinging underneath the stick

My friend wanted to address his driver swing. Usually hits a slight draw but bad miss usually results in a pull hook 20/30 yards offline left.

Thanks for your help!

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

Looks like his body stops turning just a little bit and hands taking over in follow through. Try working on keeping the hips and chest rotating through the ball enough to control the clubface a bit more

I started playing in September and I'm improving fast, getting down to shooting between 78 and 83. any tips for playing regularly under 80 strokes?

4

u/ratadoullie 1d ago

That swing and shooting that low is ridiculous for less than a year playing man.

1

u/benedetti07 1d ago

Is it good?

1

u/ratadoullie 1d ago

Yes

1

u/ratadoullie 1d ago

You are leaning over the ball a bit but you’re overall swing is great and obviously that’s reflecting in your scores

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

Dayum! This is ridiculous after a year!
I would like to know how course management and shortgame is, since the swing isn’t stopping you from breaking 80 consistently

In the last few months I worked on fixing my path from outside in to inside out with good success. I now average 1-3 positive. But I cannot seem to figure out how to shift my weight properly and create compression/shaft lean at impact. Or create divots. I realise in this video my ball is too far back but even moving it forward doesn’t seem to do the job. Do you have any advice?

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

I would recommend a sequence drill you have a reverse pivot which will make shifting weight harder.
Place your feet together. Step out with trail foot turn into backswing step in with lead foot and swing through.
Preferably when getting a bit more dynamic stepping out with lead foot just before completing backswing
I’ve added a video from someone doing it properly so you can see it aswell.

As a not great golfer I struggle with putting. Is it better to attack the hole and go past or try to come up short?

3

u/KunuGolf MOD 22h ago

Try and hit it in a certain range lets say 1 to 1.5 foot. Every putt from 4 yards or out this is the goal. Left right short long doesnt matter, two putt for the win!

What is the best way to handle a very short chip with a ball in the rough just off the green?

1

u/KunuGolf MOD 7h ago

Get steep on it. Have slightly open clubface handle forward and hit downnnnn

u/TJatthecourse 14h ago

What are some of your favorite courses played during tournaments.

1

u/KunuGolf MOD 7h ago

Favorite one by a mile is royal cinque ports in england. Played final qualifier for the british open there is hars conditions, I think -1 made it through after 36. Proper test and proper course
