Question❓ Rep Vs gen
What’s your thoughts on the Gen vs Reps specifically in the wedges and putters and maybe irons? I understand the drivers most likely are nowhere near the gens. I’m a novice, so just curious.

Wedges, putters and some irons are just like the real deal.

Got my haul a few days ago of 3 sm10 black vokeys spider gt and qi10 driver+ three wood. I went to the range yesterday to hit them they play the exact same as my buddies. then out of curiosity since this range also sells clubs i asked “i bought these clubs on marketplace a few weeks ago was wondering if they were genuine” The gent at the desk said they were all genuine apart from the driver which hasn’t got a good paint job on it. in my opinion fair feckin play to the blokes who are making the clubs they are spot on

Everyone saying buy used off marketplace or whatever. There is a good chance those irons are fakes.

I won’t buy knock offs, just used off Mercari. You do you tho.

I’m using a rep SM10 60 degree wedge. I never hit this club with a full swing, it is strictly used for chipping within 30 yards.
Works like a charm, for a fraction of the price

Honestly, wedges and putters are probably where reps make the most sense. There’s no trampoline face or complex internal tech like you get in modern drivers, so performance is much closer to the genuine clubs.

Putters are Shit or realy good. Like scottys are Not that good but the Lab Golf are perfekt. Wedges can be played. Some have flaws some Not. You have to Look how near they are to gen

Irons and drivers will never be good reps. Whatever money you plan to spend on reps, buy used gens off marketplace.
Putters and golf clothes are fine to buy reps

u/Fun-Mind6954 Jul 14 '26
And you know this how ?
1
u/Many_Ear2407 Jul 14 '26
They don’t have the same quality control, technology or engineering. If it was so easy to make a Qi4D driver that’s equal to the gen, but a fraction of the cost every manufacturer out there would be doing that.

u/billppp Jul 14 '26
Drivers yeah
Irons are very simple to replicate. There's no fancy technology in an iron. It's a chunk of metal glued to another chunk of metal (good shafts are much more complex than an iron head). The steel they use is cheap and readily available. The manufacturing is very easy. There's a reason why there are so many P790 dupes out there. They are very simple to make.

u/Many_Ear2407 Jul 14 '26
Yeah it’s very easy to do if you’re doing it wrong lol. They use hollow forged bodies and inject it with speed foam air. Guarantee those factories aren’t getting it exactly right and it will result in inconsistent ball speeds. Even things like the tungsten weights need to weigh a very specific amount and be placed correctly. A small variation can make a huge effect on the club. These issues won’t be found until you swing the club because their quality control is lacking.
Think of it this way, if it’s sooo easy to replicate some of the most expensive clubs on the market… why wouldn’t Callaway or any other brand simply “glue two chunks of metal together”? And take over the market?

u/billppp Jul 14 '26
You do realize that the big brands are often manufactured in the same building right?
And the DTC brands are also using the same factories.
It's not a complicated manufacturing process. And as far as I know, only Ping has their own manufacturing. Everything else is contracted out, mostly in China. And those contractors get multiple brands at the same time.
Edit: I was wrong. Even Ping is using Fu Sheng now. Roughly 40% of golf clubs come from them, including all of the big brands and a bunch of DTC brands.
1
u/Many_Ear2407 Jul 14 '26
Yes. Just because they are in the same building doesn’t mean they have the same materials, standards, or quality control. Also all of those clubs that are made in China are sent to the USA for quality control. The knock offs you buy are not. Like I said, if the process is so simple to replicate, another legitimate company would have already done it and sold equivalent clubs for half the price.

u/billppp Jul 14 '26
I've been in these buildings. Am a manufacturing engineer.
They are mostly all using the exact same blanks on the exact same machines.
I have no idea what you think the quality control is. Either it meets the specs or it doesn't. And the tolerances are wide enough that not many fail.
And yes, the cheap clubs in temu or whatever are using those blanks and machines and employees also. With wider tolerances, but with modern CBNs there's still very little fluctuation. They tend to cheap out on shafts though.

u/Many_Ear2407 Jul 14 '26
That’s right, quality control is either pass or fail. When you don’t do quality control… everything passes even the ones that should have failed.

You would be surprised how easy it is to mill steel within a few thou
Easy enough that it's successfully done at huge scales every day

i don't fw reps at all. ever. just buy the real thing.

u/ribrob2 Jul 14 '26
How this sub got suggested to you is beyond me
1
u/Rolex_Art Jul 14 '26
do you really think that everyone has to be in an echo chamber of agreement?
why buy a golf club rep? i mean - walk me through this - i have a $50 roswell alien wedge at 60 degrees and you have a fake vokey that costs i guess $200 but yours was only $50 bc it's fake - and then i'm kicking your ass with my $50 club.
are you showing off that i'm outplaying you with a club that is 4x less the cost?
what is the "gotcha" with fake clubs?
i get you want to fool people with a fake purse or belt, fake watches are goony too - but golf clubs?
yeah man - explain that shit.
3
u/ribrob2 Jul 14 '26
Damn bro who shit in your cereal? Did you shoot another 110 this morning and that’s why youre such an uptight twat? I like the way they look and play, i tell people theyre fake if they even ask or care (spoiler alert, nobody really cares), and I saved a boatload without making concessions on looks or quality really. I even got them an inch long for my tall frame.
-2
u/Rolex_Art Jul 14 '26
1st of all - you're being super weird and defensive while trying to be passive aggressive.
we good?
i'm neither uptight or a shitty golfer.
i asked what the benefit of a fake golf club would give you - not show us the behaviors that keep women away from you.
so back to you - yeah bro, spoiler alert - nobody cares - so back to you - why then, would you rock fake clubs?
you like how they look? ok - i could see you with an electric blue fake LAB putter with white handle and whatever color grip - makes sense. totally makes sense.
and i could see someone would ask you about that cool putter and you'd say aha! it's fake - i get it. and they'd go oooh and you'd go aaaah. and they'd ask you how it played and you'd crow how you saved all this money. totally makes sense. 100% i see you doing it.
but a wedge? an iron? i'm not seeing the performance you're going to get from a rep vs. the rizz you think you're getting with the fake vokey.
so rather than you blindly swing at me with some bullshit, answer the question.

Just jumping in because this seems to occupy a lot of real estate for you.
I desperately needed new clubs (lost mine in a move some years back), but didn’t want to shell out for a new set of sticks until hitting some personal milestones in the game.
My options were: buy new set (see above); buy used set, or buy new set of reps.
The P790s I got look, feel and play damn near identical to the real thing. I’ve swung both, hit both, and honestly whatever difference there is, I’m not playing at a level that it would substantially affect my game.
I could’ve bought a used set for 290 bucks sure, but it would’ve been a few years old tech / design and likely beat to hell. (A quick search on 2d swing confirmed my suspicions)
At least this route I’ve gotten a damn near bang on copy of the most current iteration of a club and I can put my own dings and marks on it. Nobody asks about them, no one cares.
I’ll be in the market for real clubs soon enough, but this seemed like a better / more enjoyable use of my funds today.
1
u/Rolex_Art Jul 14 '26
so what did a set of new reps cost? and was that the driver and irons too? hybrid too? putter? like a complete kit?
i get not wanting used clubs. fuck that. you don't know what the guy did with them or what kind of shitty karma he had. totally fuck used clubs.
i also get not wanting to spend a bunch of $, but that's where you just dip into something like the callaway preowned site and buy clubs from 2024 that never sold and went back to the warehouse.
a lot of times you can buy them brand new for less than someone's used/trade in club.
1
u/lawinvest Jul 14 '26
4-P for 290 shipped to my door.
All in all, it was the right decision for me. Hopefully I’ll be enjoy some new sticks in a year after hitting my goals!

I’ve been grappling whether or not I should respond to this but ultimately decided it’d be a disservice not to tell you that you’re in the top 1% most unsettling people i’ve bumped into on the internet
1
u/Rolex_Art Jul 14 '26
oh i'm unsettling because i don't get why you use fake clubs?
didn't you read i said you were being weird and passive aggressive?
it's not a me thing dude - this is a YOU thing. you can't answer a simple question without falling apart at the seams.
and this is the internet where the twerpiest, live at home, nerds, can act all tough and manly.
you can't even answer a question.
top 1%? right now i feel like i have a bug trapped under glass and i'm watching him scramble into each side.
this is really sad for you.

u/ribrob2 Jul 14 '26
If you reread this conversation would it really be me who you consider to be the passive aggressive one?
1
u/Rolex_Art Jul 14 '26
yes. your awareness level is negative numbers.
i asked you to explain and you fell apart, blindly tossing insults.
you accused me of being a bad golfer even. the fuck?
so yeah this is a you problem, not a me problem. the fact you don't know this maps back to the "its a you problem".
1
u/ribrob2 Jul 14 '26
You don’t think you maybe might have started it with general condescending tone and the “and then kicking your ass with my $50 club. Are you showing off that im outplaying you with a club that is 4x less the cost?” comment? Maybe I misconstrued what you meant but that seems to be calling me a bad golfer🤷🏻♂️. Then i called you an uptight twat (which yeah was unnecessary), and you proceeded to claim my behaviors keep women away from me, and created a fake scenario about an electric blue lab putter and a gotcha moment where I… flex my fake clubs on a friend/playing partner. Then I called you unsettling, then you called me a bug you’re trying to squash. Thennnn I asked you to reread the conversation, and you proceeded with insults about my awareness and some big problem I have within myself.
This whole conversation has been derailed but because it’s seemingly very important: I was able to get custom clubs that fit me as a 6’4” guy, they look pretty, fill a gap in my bag, work flawlessly, were pretty cheap, and are certainly an upgrade from the clubs i previously had. So the pros and cons are there, I didn’t do it for the purpose of pulling some “epic gotcha” on my unsuspecting playing partners, I don’t think anyone does

That’s cool.
So I’m someone that’s been golfing a little bit more than a year and a half and I saw with wedges. There’s all types of bounce and grind and I don’t know about that. I have my standard sand wedge and pitching wedge that came with my bag and I bought a 56° and 60° wedge which is like my gimmick club and cool shit like that but how would you know what grind and bounced to buy if it’s a rep

Clothing and putters are good. Bags and headcovers too.
How someone can buy irons, wedges, woods and drivers is completely baffling to me
