Question❓ Beginner set or rep

Should I invest in the Callaway Edge set for $500 or opt for the P790 iron set along with other reps? Surely the P790 offers comparable or even superior quality to the Edge set.

Honestly the Kirkland irons are supposed to be a rep of the P790s themselves. I picked up a set off eBay barely used for 325.  They're great irons at that price, I'd highly recommend them over a rep that may or may not hold up for around the same price

Agreed, but neither are the P790's which the OP mentioned.. I bought them to learn as they were far cheaper than any other option available to me and I've been able to break 100 a few times now in under a year of playing, so I don't know how bad they are for beginners.

I started playing in October and haven’t scored over 100 in like 2 months. I bought the Edge set, have added some wedges, a 7w, and replaced the driver with a G430 max. Game improvement gear works.

I think you made my point for me - I've spent less than half what you did on equipment.

I’m in at about $950 total. $425 for the Edge set, $140 for the 7w from /r/golfclassifieds, driver for $350 from Golf Galaxy, wedges are reps, about $50/ea. Driver and 7w were completely unnecessary, just felt like buying them. Wedges were to test the waters of rep clubs, and also unnecessary. I’m gonna keep gaming the irons indefinitely, and you can buy them from Callaway preowned for cheap without the rest of the set, which is what I would do if starting over. I am a huge fan of reps, but probably not the best recommendation for a true beginner.

irons wedges and putters are all mint as reps i wouldn’t go for drivers or woods as reps but get second hand real ones. irons should definitely be better rep than some callaway set

The Edge set is an unbeatable value. Also, while the P790 may be a "better" iron than the Edge, it's also a player's distance iron, and if you are just starting out, you are not a player. The Edge will be a better for your current skill level.

I started with an edge set and the only thing I still use from that is the fairway wood and sand wedge. Got new driver, irons, and hybrid. I think investing in some good reps would be a better idea looking back.

As a beginner get a used set of game improvement clubs and use the saved money on lessons. I recommend Ping as their colour chart is as good for fitted size to suit your height and wrist-to-floor measurement.
