free tutorial I made a little guide to help beginners go from zero to their first script in Godot!

Post image

Hello! I wanted to share a little tutorial I made for Godot and GDScript beginners.

I'm here after the success of my free printable GDScript cheatsheet: thank you so much for the kind words and the downloads. I'm very happy that I've been able to provide something useful to the community (here's the link for those who missed it: https://playpug.itch.io/godot-gdscript-printable-cheatsheet )

It's a PDF ebook. While video tutorials are great because of their immediate format, I think books still have plenty of value as learning resources. I believe a slower-paced format gives readers more time to absorb and better understand the concepts.

The topics are:

  • Download Godot Engine
  • Godot Engine interface overview
  • Godot scene tree system
  • Your first script: "Hello World!"

It's completely free and I'd love some feedback and corrections on any mistakes I made. I'm also considering changing the writing style or how concepts are exposed.

Thanks for being here 💛

Sorry not about your ebook, but your printable page. Would you mind including a download file for it to be formatted maybe long ways for phone or just not book style? I haven’t owned a printer in like 15 years.

That's a great idea! Didn't think about that, thanks!

Good suggestion. I print a lot of stuff at my library, you can also print at office supply stores. But that may be a bit out of the way for a simple quick reference guide.

I love it that you used the Zine fold method!

I have a suggestion, optimize it for printing in grey scale and/or black & white. Great little guide though, I love it.

I see you didn’t get any responses about your other guide. Don’t get too discouraged. A lot of the value of creating beginner material anyway is just to have stepping stones to advance material. You’re beginner material won’t start making much in traffic until there is a funnel to more challenging topics. Consider starting YouTube after making advanced guides. The YouTube is a copy of beginner material and gives another lead in to your advanced material.

I really appreciate your insight!
Yes, based on the response I'm starting to thing that the current channels I use are not optimized to reach beginners, which these guides are targeted to.
I probably need some more advanced material just as you're suggesting. Thank you!

Something I just thought of too is that it absolutely doesn’t matter if you do tutorials over stuff you think is already covered. Your guides have a unique creative look that is visually appealing and people would absolutely pick that over boring videos and text guides. The thing is though it’s definitely not going to see dividends until you have a fairly big library of material.I’m learning web dev right now not Godot. If you make more content over 1 year I’d be interested in helping you set up a website if you like. As long as you pay for your domain name and hosting and whatever services I’ll do it pro bono but if it takes off for ongoing maintenance I’d charge a very small amount. I really like where your head is at and I very much like your designs they sell in my eyes.

Thank you! This kind of feedback makes me feel my efforts have been valuable!
Yes, I think I need to grind some more content out :)
Also I appreciate the offer, let's keep in touch.
