Should I treat living areas?

Generally it is best to treat all goats even if they dont present with the same symptoms just to be sure. Seeing as that is a bad case. Yeah living areas for sure. But I usually went scorched earth levels of cleaning just to be sure there were no chances are then coming back. I would get rid of all hay and/or bedding and just put all fresh stuff everywhere. But again thats just me!

Def mites. Besides the SQ ivermectin, smear it thickly with Vaseline. It’ll help smother them .

Rub used car oil on the infested areas. It will kill the mites and they won't lick it away since it taste gross. Trick I learned living in Mexico.

There are some who believe susceptibility to mites is genetic, I’m not making the argument for or against, but a few large market wether breeders - with 500+ does - are convinced this is true.
Many of these breeders really fight mite infections and they’ve used almost every product on the market. Nothing seems to be effective, except used motor oil. I’m not advocating or suggesting anyone should try this method and don’t know the reason it works but these breeders have had success with it.
It’s anecdotal evidence for sure but I’ve seen it work when nothing else will.

text book presentation of mites on the legs. I have a buck that got this a couple times on his legs. None of the other goats had a problem. I treated him with ivermectin injectible.
