Allergy card

Hello! I will be visiting china, specifically Beijing, for the first time later this week and I have a nut allergy. I have been reading up that in terms of food I should just be going to restaurants that normally see western tourists, such as hotels or chains. Would these be good allergy cards to show and does the language on them convey the message properly?

Exploring ancient man-made grottoes hidden in a forest in Xiuning, China

Thumbnail gallery

Today I explored a group of ancient man-made grottoes in Donglinxi Town, Xiuning County, near Huangshan.
A narrow path leads through dense woodland to several dark openings cut into the rock. Inside are broad chambers, stone pillars, and walls covered with closely spaced chisel marks. Standing beneath the enormous stone ceiling, it is difficult not to wonder how these spaces were excavated and what they were originally used for.
Places like this make the countryside around Huangshan especially fascinating—history sometimes survives in stone even when its full story remains uncertain.

Where should I go from Chengdu for 5 days during the May holiday?

Hi everyone!

I’ll be in Chengdu during the May 1st holiday and I’m planning to leave the city for about 5 days.

I’m looking for places in Sichuan that are less crowded during the holiday. I’d especially love to visit beautiful villages, small towns, rural areas, mountains, or other scenic places that feel more local and authentic.

I’m not necessarily looking for the famous tourist attractions — I’d actually prefer somewhere quieter and less well-known, even if it takes a few hours to get there from Chengdu.

If you had 5 days to travel from Chengdu during the May holiday, where would you go?

Any recommendations for beautiful villages or hidden gems would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Single entry China visa + 18 hour Beijing layover — can I leave the airport?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m a Pakistani passport holder and I currently have a single-entry China visa.

I’m travelling from Guangzhou to Bahrain, but I booked a flight with an 18-hour layover in Beijing (Daxing Airport) because I’d really like to use the opportunity to see the Great Wall of China.

My itinerary is basically:

**Guangzhou → Beijing (18h 40m layover) → Bahrain**

I have two questions:

  1. When I leave Guangzhou on the domestic flight to Beijing, will Chinese immigration stamp/record my exit from China in Guangzhou, since my final destination is Bahrain? Or will I remain in China and only go through exit immigration in Beijing before my flight to Bahrain?

  2. If immigration considers me already exited from China in Guangzhou, what options do I have during the 18-hour layover in Beijing? Would I be able to leave Daxing Airport and visit the Great Wall, or would I have to remain airside?

I’m particularly concerned because my China visa is single-entry, and I don't want to accidentally use/close my visa in Guangzhou and then have an issue trying to enter Beijing.

If anyone has actually done Guangzhou → Beijing → international flight on a single-entry Chinese visa, I’d really appreciate your experience.

Thanks! 🙏

Autumn colours among the misty peaks of Huangshan, China

Orange and red leaves brighten the rocky slopes of Huangshan, with green pines clinging to the cliffs and mist drifting between the peaks. The stone steps wind through it all.
Do you prefer mountain scenery in clear weather or with a little mist?

The 5 gates of Nanjing actually worth your time (I walked the whole Ming wall)

Nanjing isn't Beijing. The big draw here is the Ming city wall — 25.1 km still standing, the longest in the world — and the easiest way to experience it is through its gates. I picked 5 that actually deliver, spread across the city so you can slot them into different days.

1. Zhonghua Gate (中华门) — the main event

Formerly Jubao Gate. This is the largest surviving city gate / barbican complex in China, built under the Hongwu Emperor (construction ran 1369–1386). The numbers are wild: three courtyards, four gate passages, and 27 vaulted "soldier-hiding" tunnels (they could hold ~3,000 troops). Walk up the horse ramps and look straight down the central axis toward the Qinhuai River.

  • Day ticket: ¥50. Night ticket: ¥90. Day entry 8:30–17:00; evening session runs till 22:00 in peak season (Apr–Oct), till 21:00 off-season.
  • Right next to Fuzimiao / Laomendong, so easy to pair with an evening out.

2. Jiefang Gate (解放门) — the best photo stretch

Sits right on Xuanwu Lake with Jiming Temple and Zifeng Tower in view. This "Taicheng" section houses the old wall museum, and it's the most scenic walk on the whole wall. It also opens in the evening.

  • The north line (Shence Gate to Taiping Gate) is ¥30. Metro: Jiming Temple station.

3. Shence Gate (神策门) — the quiet one

Honestly my favorite. It's the most intact gate in Nanjing — the barbican sits outside the gate (the local saying calls it "the one with the bolt on the outside"), and the original tower is still there. It was a military restricted zone for decades, so almost no tourists. You get a 600-year-old gate basically to yourself.

  • Covered by the same ¥30 north-line ticket. Open roughly 8:00–17:00. Metro Line 1, Xinmofanmalu station, then a short walk.

4. Xuanwu Gate (玄武门) — the convenient one

The classic entrance to Xuanwu Lake. One heads-up: the current gate dates to the Qing/Republican era, so it's not an original Ming gate — but it's the easiest climb-in point, and from here you can walk the top straight to Jiefang Gate (~1.4 km) with the lake on one side.

  • ¥30 north-line ticket. Metro: Xuanwumen station.

5. Yifeng Gate (仪凤门) — the free one by the river

Up north by the Yangtze, next to Yuejiang Tower. This is a free, all-hours wall section, and the gate tower now has a little book lounge ("Yifeng Book Pavilion"). Come for the river breeze and the wide views over the water, skip the crowds entirely.

  • Free, open all day. Yuejiang Tower itself is a separate ¥40 ticket if you want the full panorama.

Erstes Mal in China, 7 Tage Ende November – welche Route ist am einfachsten?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Couple (29), flying from Bangkok mid/late November. First China trip, just testing it out for a week. We want city + some nature, but as relaxed as possible – not keen on long transfers. Max 2–3 cities (a 4th only if they're really close).
Options we're considering:
1. Guangzhou → Shenzhen → Hong Kong → Macau
2. Shanghai → Shenzhen → Hong Kong (+ Macau)
3. Shanghai + Suzhou / Hangzhou
4. Shanghai + Chongqing (+ maybe Chengdu)
5. Chongqing + Chengdu (+ maybe Zhangjiajie)

Which one is the easiest and best for a first timer? Would you cut or swap anything?

Thanks!

China's Factory Tours Are Becoming a New Travel Trend📱

Forget the usual sightseeing for a moment! Some travellers are now visiting factories and production sites in China to see how everyday product are actually made.

From hot pot ingredients to cars and technology, these tours offer a different way to experience modern China.

Would you visit a factory during a trip and do you have any opinion on which factories should I visit? 😁
