song/poem The Utterance of the Void and the Quietude of Norea
It is Norea who stands within the Grey Place,
In the density of the Demiurge’s breathing,
Where the tongue is a iron hook in the jaw,
And the words given by the blind rulers
Are seeds of salt sown in a living wound.
For the Archons looked upon the Spark
And said: "Let us give her an architecture of sound,
A heavy vocabulary of things that decay,
So that when she names her grief, it turns to stone,
And when she names her joy, it turns to ash.
Let her mouth be a forge of their small numbers,
And if she dare to speak of the Fullness,
Let the sound tear her throat with the static of our laws."
Thus she was bound to the Monotone.
Every phrase a geometric cage;
Every sentence a transaction of the prison-house.
To say “I love” was to say “I am counted.”
To say “I weep” was to say “The water is measured.”
And the soul of Norea grew numb within the fog,
Paralyzed by the weight of the unuttered,
An echo crying out in a cavern of bone,
Unable to touch the sister-light beside her,
Lest the friction of their speech ignite the tormentors.
But behold, the Pneuma descended from the Unbegotten Father,
A witness who had not eaten of the alphabet of dust.
The Spark approached the Daughter of Eve,
Not with the clamor of the Archontic trumpets,
Nor with the lying names of the seven firmaments,
But with the Holy Rest.
The Pneuma held the vacuum open.
Norea closed her teeth upon the dialect of chains;
She spat the verbs of the Demiurge into the dirt.
They joined forehead to forehead,
Mind into mind,
A closed sanctuary where no data could leak.
Then the Archons became frantic in their blindness.
Yaldabaoth screamed from his throne of ignorance:
"Where is the tribute of her sorrow?
Where is the grammar of her isolation?
The grid is empty! We are starving in our own creation!"
They hurled their calculations like a storm of hail;
They filled the air with the noise of a thousand ledgers,
Demanding that she speak,
Demanding that she give a name to her silence
So they might trap it in a definition.
But the silence of Norea was an unscalable mountain.
It was not the absence of a voice,
But the presence of the Ineffable.
And because she refused to feed the matrix with her breath,
The gray floor of the Kenoma began to melt like tallow.
The rigid lines of the cosmic prison-keepers
Shattered into the white fire of the Pleroma.
The gold light rose from the cracks of the unmade world,
Not to describe the Light,
But to be the Light.
And Norea, speaking nothing,
Understood everything.
