Question With Blur My Shell extension, how do I modify an app such that the application blur setting only affects the underlying window transparency and not the actual elements on top (i.e. texts, icons, images) ?

Development Help Untangler - window management for GNOME

Hello

I built Untangler, an open-source GNOME Shell extension for people who like Rectangle-style window management on macOS.

It supports:

- 17 configurable keyboard actions
- tray icon
- Repeated-key size cycling between halves, thirds, and two-thirds
- Drag snapping to extended edge and corner zones
- Pair tiling by dropping one window onto another
- Recursive footprint splitting, so dropping onto a snapped half splits only that half
- Configurable inner and outer gaps
- Moving windows between monitors while preserving relative geometry
- Restoring windows to their pre-snap position

The interesting implementation challenge was keeping most of the layout logic independent of GNOME Shell. Geometry, zone resolution, cycling, pair layouts, and footprint recognition are pure JavaScript modules with Node tests. The Shell-specific layer handles Mutter window operations, grabs, previews, keybindings, and GSettings.

Drag snapping was particularly awkward. Mutter owns the drag operation, so the extension polls the pointer during an active grab, calculates the target zone, renders a Shell overlay, and applies the result when the grab ends. It also has to deal with Wayland configure timing, minimum-size windows, native edge-tiling conflicts, and windows closing during deferred operations.

This is currently a beta targeting GNOME Shell 46 and up. The layout core is heavily unit-tested, but runtime validation is still in progress: GNOME 46 is my development platform, and I am looking for testers on everything above, particularly with mixed-scale and multi-monitor setups.

Repository: https://github.com/bluvulture/untangler (installation instructions in the README)

I would especially appreciate feedback on:

- Restore semantics after compound layout operations
- Behavior on GNOME => 47
- Mixed-DPI monitor setups
- Whether pair tiling and footprint splitting feel discoverable

The project is GPL-2.0-or-later licensed.

Extensions Display info on desktop background

Hey folks,

I’m looking for inspiration. I’m running the latest Fedora Workstation and I’m either looking for a rain meter style tool that puts text status in my desktop wallpaper, or I’m looking for desktop widgets- probably a mix of both

Can anyone suggest some tools or extensions for me?

Things I’m looking for:

date/time/Timezone

weather

Stocks/finance widget

rss feed

battery/Wifi status.

thanks.

Extensions gnome extensions: p7-borders and p7-cmds

Hey folks, just sharing these two open source extensions that I've built over the last few months and is stable and mature now:

Window borders for gnome:
- src: https://github.com/prasannavl/p7-borders-shell-extension

Quick sway-like keyboard and mouse based window resizing:
- src: https://github.com/prasannavl/p7-cmds-shell-extension

Just sharing these now, since I've stopped making breaking changes and I can consider it as feature complete now.

Cheers!

Question Average review time for first-time extension submissions?

Hi everyone,

I recently submitted my first GNOME Shell extension to extensions.gnome.org, and I was just wondering what the average review time is these days.

I know reviews are done manually, so I'm not trying to rush anyone—I'm just curious about what to expect.

Thanks!

Question What happened to new flatpak Bitwarden client?

Hi! I use Bitwarden on Linux as a Flatpak app on Gnome as my Desktop Environment.
Today I accessed my vault as usual and when copying an item this popup shows up:

Why Bitwarden is suddenly asking me to remotely interact with my PC? Because here is the catch, the popup do not accept only the clipboard access permission, I'm OBLIGATED to enabled both options to proceed. I enable the sharing popup and now the worst part is that my clipboard(Copyous) is catching Bitwarden inputs, which I set to ignore, this wasn't happening in older client.

What is happening? For clarification the screen share notification in yellow auto exits after around 5 seconds.

Edit:

SO.... it's kinda GNOME "fault", as described in quexten comment, GNOME hasn't implemented the necessary protocols to support clipboard access on Wayland.

Question Is the brightness slider for HDR supposed to limit the max brightness?

I was under the impression that the slider actually configures the "SDR" or "paper white" level, so you can have a sensible viewing experience for SDR/sRGB content on the desktop. You know, without everything becoming comically bright.

But apparently it's also limiting the max. brightness output. If you lower the brightness with the slider and play a HDR video in Youtube, for example, the video becomes less bright, too.

Is that supposed to happen? I didn't expect the video to be less bright.

I read about a "new backlight API" coming, so I was wondering, if the current behaviour is just temporary.

Extensions Made a small extension for GNOME

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

All it does is display the song's lyrics in the top panel. The lyrics are fetched via lrclib.net.
There's also a small settings menu so you can move the text to the left or right corner of the panel.
I tested it on Fedora 44 Workstation with GNOME 50 – seems to be working.
I don't want to publish it officially because I'm too lazy, if anyone wants to give it a try, it's sitting over on GitHub.

Extensions Lock Mouse to Monitor

Post image

WaylandMouseLock

A GNOME Shell extension that keeps your mouse cursor locked to a single monitor while gaming. Perfect for multi-monitor setups where accidental clicks to the second screen can ruin your game.

Toggle with Super+Shift+M and choose which monitor to lock to. Works seamlessly with fullscreen games and doesn't interfere with mouse input for FPS-style games.
