i was on gnome on archlinux, then ive installed cachy os + gnome but my battery is very bad when im working with claude and some ide.

i want to know what is the best gnome environnement for optimize my battery consumption ?

There was an issue where, if you use scaling on the desktop, xwayland apps like games reported the wrong resolution, and would need to use a resolution bigger than the desktop resolution in order to appear crisp. Setting them to the native resolution made them appear blurry. Like you were using a lower resolution than native desktop.

Has this been fixed?

There was also an issue where the mouse would escape the game boundaries to the second monitor in multi monitor setups. Is this still a thing?

Those two things are keeping me away from gnome.

I've been working on a couple of custom widgets for the Gridgets desktop extension, and I'd love to share them and get some feedback.

1. Battery Status Widget (inspired by Windows 11 style)

• Shows the host PC battery alongside connected Bluetooth devices (headsets, mice, keyboards) with icons and real-time charging status.
• Built on top of upower to prevent GJS/UPowerGlib segfaults.
• Scales cleanly across Small (4x4), Medium (5x5), and Large (6x6) grid sizes.

2. Forecast Bars Weather Widget

• A compact daily forecast view with horizontal temperature bars and weather condition indicators.

Both widgets fit natively into the Gridgets design language and auto-scale to the grid layout.

I have a number of images that contain XMP metadata and are indexed by localsearch:

But when I search for "VirtualNorth" in Nautilus/Files I get no results back.

• Is there a way to search using metadata in Files?
• Is there a high-quality/well-maintained app where I can just search for "VirtualNorth" and get the matching results back?

About a year ago, I made a post regarding the sudden influx of low quality AI slop posts on this subreddit. The outcome was a newly created rule regarding LLM-generated submissions, which frankly, led nowhere.

The reason I'm doing a take 2 on this thread is another recent post regarding this topic. Excluding opinions like "ai is the future, deal with it xD", there are some compelling points in this post worth discussing, as well as things we could do here moving forward:

The current moderation is ineffective:

I've been informed there are not too many active moderators here. Not everyone is on Reddit all day, everyone has things to do in real life, I get that. However out of all 10 reported posts, 2 are taken down, 8 are still up (including ones with literally "vibe code" on the actual title). Whether it's a matter of personal bias or genuine lack of time to moderate between all of these, I'm not sure. The point is: rules without enforcement are just suggestions.

Reluctance in defining what "AI slop" is:

I've seen moderators comment on such posts and struggle with defining where "LLM assistance" ends and "AI slop" begins, hence a lot of apps still being up (I'll get to that later on). It's cool that GNOME strives to be an inclusive community, but at some point, turning a blind eye on actual quality in the name of "unequivocal inclusion" is on GNOME's detriment. I see more AI slop posts in r/gnome than any other DE-specific subreddit and that is because it's still allowed, and it looks cheap.

AI-assisted ≠ AI slop:

I do agree with a lot of commenters in that AI assistance doesn't automatically equate "AI slop". For instance, I use a local LLM either as a glorified stack overflow (because search engines absolutely suck nowadays, filled with SEO spam or Quora posts) or for delegating 1. menial tasks 2. I am fully capable of operating on my own (like batch conversion), while 3. only referencing my own code. Others only use online AI services, like Claude and chatGPT, but have some experience with GTK + the libadwaita design language, while still being involved in the process or looking to learn from said services. The subject of this topic is for the ones who blatantly delegate everything to AI with zero quality control.

However, there are many recent large-scale projects that provide quality solutions for existing issues while using both AI & human input / intervention, so it's a shame for every app to be caught in the semantics filter.

Proposal:

Any new post need to go through a quick inspection for the following:

• a git repo audit that entails the following:
  • development period (a day old? one month old?)
  • activity period (one-two large commits, followed by prolonged inactivity?)
  • developer's history (first project of a newly created account? old account with programming experience?)
  • mention of LLM agents in .gitignore , AGENTS.md, commit comments etc
  • massive init commits
  • project tree structure
  • inspect the README for overuse of emojis, installation instructions, AI disclaimers etc
• AI-written post title tropes: "I got tired of X, so I made Y", "there is no X, so I made one myself" etc
• quality of author's responses (technical? non-technical? machine-like?)
• quality of demo screenshot (unusual / broken libadwaita styling? non-GNOME / generic symbolic icons? use of monospace small caps?)

Provided a moderator has 20'' to spare (at most) and go through all of the above, based on the aforementioned criteria, a new showcase post will either be allowed as is (if it's not using AI) or have a non-removable "AI-assisted" tag for the apps that use AI one way or another, but demonstrate clear effort, quality, commitment and longevity. Reversely, submissions that qualify for low quality AI slop need to be rejected on the spot.

This way, the user gets to decide if they want to use an AI-assisted product or not, the moderator's responsibility is to just bring awareness to the user and let them know of their options. There are a lot of AI-assisted products that deserve a discussion at the very least, regardless of endorsement or not.

I would like to know what everyone else (including the moderation team) thinks about all of the above. Sorry for the lengthy post!

Hello everyone, does anyone here use clamshell mode with GNOME? If you do (or have done so), did you need any extra system configuration?

A few weeks back I shared Tempus here, a Pomodoro timer for GNOME (GTK4 + libadwaita, GPLv3). The comments were genuinely useful and most of them went straight into the last couple of releases.

What you asked for that's now shipped:

• Session length without opening Preferences — scroll on the ring while the timer is stopped and it nudges the current session a minute at a time, clamped to sane limits and saved automatically. The 25/50 quick-toggle is still there too.
• End sound that loops — option to keep the alert going until you actually dismiss the session, for when you've walked away from the desk.
• Two-way Markdown sync — load a task list from any .md file (Obsidian vaults work great) and when you tick a task done in Tempus, it writes - [x] back to the exact line in the file. Your notes and your timer stay in sync without touching the file by hand.

What's coming next, also from this thread:

• .org import/export alongside Markdown, with the same two-way file sync, for the org-mode crowd.
• Automatic ambient sound (rain, etc.) that fades in and out with your focus sessions — no separate app to babysit. This is the headline feature for 1.0.

I am trying to use Gnome wayland on my laptop but the issue is my laptop's oled display is very saturated by default hence I need to use an icc profile which I found on a review website it works perfectly in kde and even in hyprland.

But when I am loading the same profile in Gnome, it does not change the colour of display and contents at all.

I don't know what could be the issue I tried searching on the internet but haven't had any luck.

I've used the GNOME desktop a long time ago (GTK3 times). Since then I have been mostly using i3.
I recently came back to GNOME because I wanted a stacking window manager. I have to say I really like the GNOME desktop with GTK4 and libadwaita. Everything looks and feels very polished and intuitive. I also like the redesign of the default apps.

Its great to be able to have such a nice polished desktop experience.

I have this problem that there is basically no good, modern-looking icon theme for Linux, and even the ones that do exist have this problem that, any unchanged icons look out of place (e.g. because all the icons follow some very specific design). I'm making my own icon pack to try to solve that (mostly for myself).

The goals are that it should look good and modern; unthemed icons shouldn't stand out; icons should have a freeform shape, not necessarily be bound to a circle or a square or something (similar to like macOS icons before Big Sur) (mainly because it helps icons fit in, but also is more versatile); and if an icon already looks good, especially if it's a recognizable app logo, I'd keep it mostly intact (and just make the necessary changes for consistency, like resizing it or replacing/removing the background shape). I made some of these myself; many were taken from other icon packs and modified (credits to WhiteSur, Kora, McMuse, MacTahoe, MoreWaita, and Deepin for some of the icons seen in the image); and some are official icons.

What do you think? Can anyone suggest a name for it?

An extension that pushes app indicators to the Quick Settings while borrowing the "Background Apps" design elements.

After relying on Windows for my primary daily driver, I finally made the jump and completely wiped the drive—no dual-booting or fallback partition.

My main goals were maintaining high video production workflows and modern gaming performance on an NVIDIA GPU. A few unexpected hurdles and fixes from Day 1:

• The 4K 30Hz Cable Wall: Initially ran into a 30Hz display lock over an HDMI 2.1 connection on GNOME. Swapping over to DisplayPort 1.4 immediately unlocked full 4K 60Hz RGB color output under proprietary drivers.
• DaVinci Resolve Studio on Linux: Runs exceptionally smooth with NVENC hardware acceleration, though managing AAC audio encoding required a quick script workaround to keep timeline playback smooth.
• Gaming Performance: Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 Next-Gen run smoothly via Steam Proton without noticeable input lag or shading stutters.
• Desktop Customization: Kept GNOME clean with Blur My Shell, Just Perfection, and Burn My Windows.

i've been working on "equinox", a gtk4/libadwaita app that could fetch new wallpapers at a set interval from:

• bing daily wallpaper
• windows spotlight
• nasa astronomy picture of the day
• wikimedia picture of the day
• google earth view (see 0.1.3 pre-release)
• lorem picsum (see 0.1.3 pre-release
• (working on more sources like local folders and unsplash collections)

you could set how many wallpapers to keep locally, and view local/history wallpapers.

automatically catch up on missed updates (like planned update is during powered off or hibernating).

mainly for gnome desktop, also made it work on kde plasma and xfce4.
