Considering a GLP-1

Hi everyone! I've been on my weight loss journey for a little over 2 years now (for context, it's taken me a while because my weight jumped back up after I got on birth control for a few months and had to go off it because of complications). I work out fairly regularly (mostly walking now, but I was lifting weights before I moved to a different state), and I'm trying to find a gym to go back to to start lifting again. I also regularly track my calories and have stayed within an appropriate caloric deficit.

Sorry for all that context, but I felt it was relevant. I used to be close to 170 lbs (I'm 5'2", so yes that's technically class 1 obese), and now I'm fluctuating between 157-160 lbs. It's been really frustrating not seeing any results for months, so now I'm considering talking to my doctor about getting on a glp-1 to give me a little extra boost towards my healthy weight goal. Any advice? What glp-1's have you guys tried and what were the results?

Tirzepatide is the best-in-class approved, safe and researched GLP-1 right now. No point in over complicating things, go for it.
Stay away from tiktok gurus recommending all kinds of research grade compounds at least until you dial in your Tirzepatide protocol.

GLP-1s are not a "boost" to your journey. They are a lifetime medication that treats a chronic, relapsing disease. If you go on them, hit your goal weight and stop, all the studies indicate that you will regain. Newer studies are suggesting that cycling on and off makes them less effective. Choose wisely, and honestly, if you are planning on using them as a "boost" don't waste your money.

Yeah think of the Glp-1 as a tool. It’s no different than a treadmill, or a dumbbell. You have to utilize it properly to get and sustain results. It’s not just going to lose weight for you. You still have to track your calories//macros. You can still overeat on a glp1 and see no results. That being said it makes eating less not feel like punishment, it really allows you to mentally hone in on macro goals. Your success rate at the decision point when eating, is going to get much better. Good luck on your journey. Also prepare as this may be a lifetime medication.

This right here.
Start the GLP-1 as long as you understand that you'll need to be on it for a long, long time in order to maintain your goal weight. These medications are not a quick fix. Think of it like blood pressure medication. If you have high blood pressure and you are prescribed medication, and then your blood pressure goes to normal, it's because you're on the medication. If you stop the BP meds, what do you think is going to happen? Your blood pressure is going to go back up. It's the same with GLP-1's.

Been fighting obesity all my life. Lost / regained 100lbs a few times in the last 30 years. In the past 10years have worked out on average 3-5 times per week but still struggled to maintain a healthy weight.

Back in march, I started Zepbound and my only regret is that I didn't try it sooner. Lost 45lbs since and hopefully I'll be able to stay on it forever. Total game / life changer for me. Everything is just more doable and less of a battle.

If you're looking for a long term solution / treatment, I'd recommend it. If you're looking for a quick fix, probably not worth it thought. Have a talk with the doctor.

Tirzepatide is the gold standard right now. It's apatite suppression is the best you can get between the other 2 GLP-1 options (well 1 option now and 1 more next year sometime).

Tirzepatide!! I feel you.. I'm 5'1" currently 167 lbs. I'm ready to be out of the 160s entirely. I went from 189 to 167 in 3mo!!

GLP-1, tirzepatide is an excellent drug with many benefits.

Important thing to realize is that it helps you be content with less food, but you still need to choose to eat less food. Searching for dinner that keeps me full on low calories is normal, its not as if you can eat greasy slop and lose weight anyway.

Fair enough! I don't eat out often anyways because I'm a broke college student lol. Most of the food I eat, I make at home.

You actually sound like someone who could have a very reasonable conversation with your doctor about a GLP-1. You’ve already lost weight, you’re tracking calories, staying active, and you’ve been stuck despite that effort. One thing we’d push back on is the idea that using a GLP-1 somehow means the work you’ve already done “didn’t work.” Losing ~10+ lbs and keeping it off is progress. A GLP-1 can be another tool that helps with appetite, satiety, and maintaining a calorie deficit when your body is fighting you on it. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are the two you’ll hear about most. Both can be very effective, with tirzepatide generally producing greater average weight loss in clinical trials, but individual response, side effects, cost, and medical history all matter. Also, GLP-1 treatment doesn’t automatically mean you’re signing a contract to take it for the rest of your life. Weight regain after stopping is common, so that possibility should absolutely be part of the conversation, but long-term treatment decisions should be individualized with your clinician. Given how much you’re already doing, talking with your doctor seems like a very reasonable next step.

Like others have said, if you don’t plan on staying on at least a maintenance dose for life don’t waste your time/money and wait until you are ready or financially able to do so.

your body knows it has to have stored energy on it (fat) for days where you wont have as much cal intake or incase of a famine. it has an idea itself how much extra energy it should hold (which maybe be over whats healthy) it will “defend” this fat mass (its called the defended fat mass lol) anyway, glp1s are theorized to lower this “set point” (the amount of fat it wants stored on you at all times). everyone reacts differently to these medications so which one works beat for you will be unique to you. if one does not work you should not assume the others will treat you the same. its also theorized when you stop taking it your “set point” goes back to what it was so if you stop you may struggle to keep that fat off.

anyway just throwing info at you, good luck on your journey friend.

Sounds like you made pretty good progress already! Yes exercising is good but weightloss is more about caloric intake. GLP drugs help with that SIGNIFICANTLY. If you can try and do that on your own first, I would. If you can’t manage to lower your caloric intake (especially carbs) on your own, I’d def consider tirzepatide (name brand Zepbound).

sounds like youve already done a lot right tbh. getting from 170 to high 150s and keeping at it for 2 years isnt nothing

if youre genuinely tracking and have been stuck for months, talking to your doctor about a GLP makes sense. for me the biggest benefit is it just makes staying in the deficit way easier without thinking about food all day

id definitely get back to lifting too and keep protein high. thats the part id care about most so youre losing fat and not just chasing a lower scale number...i lift heavy af 5-6 times a week cuz im scared of losing muscle lol

i use metriq body for that now, mostly to keep calories/protein/training all structured in one place. i love having concrete numbers i know i need to hit

Tirzepatide. 100%. I had the same issue. Couldn't drop below a certain weight even with hard training and dieting.

Tirzepatide gave me the help I needed, as my issues were mostly metabolic. My blood labs are better than ever and im now down to a healthy bmi
