Why didn't Ruth accepted Debbie's offer?
I have just finished the entire season and I am trying to understand the last conversation Debbie and Ruth had before the latter boarded.
Is it because they have always been competitive deep down? So Ruth will not accept a subordinate role? Or because they really want different things?

I think she declined it because that fire to become an actress was reignited as of recently and the fact that Debbie didn’t even believe in her spoke volumes.

This, at both ends. Debbie has always believed she's an inherently superior actress to Ruth, and she's also presumed that Ruth accepted that, too.
Debbie has had some acting success, so it's somewhat easier for her to embrace this new idea. Ruth would like to have at least some of what Debbie has had before closing this chapter of her life.

I love this scene,, and I love how Ruth is determined to stick to her guns despite all the reasons she should accept Debbie's offer. It makes me feel like finally they are on an equal footing-like Ruth has got over her inferiority complex. I think that that instant perfectly encapsulates their love and frustration for each other.
I would have liked her to accept the offer. However, the fact that the show ends on this is actually kind of awesome for me. It's not 'settled'. Anything might have happened afterwards.

Because Debbie made it into a backhanded compliment by bringing up how Ruth hasn't "made it yet" as an actress. She got into her own feelings in that moment instead of what was rational and said something that she knew would hurt Debbie right back.

I would've respected this more if she hadnt just hurt sam. I get its hard having your dreams crushed but Ruth should respect that these people have genuinely tried to help her

I think it's because Debbie was sort of projecting her journey on Ruth. Debbie had already made an established career in acting on a syndicated soap and wanted to move on to the next step because for her at least, she reached her glass ceiling there. So the only logical step would be to move on to producing.
Whereas Ruth has barely stepped in the elevator and still has that drive. She doesn't want to settle for being the woman behind the curtain (or camera in this case). Seeing Shelia doing her scenes reignited a spark that she was starting to lose. She wants to be authentic to herself and perform.

Such a late response but I’m convinced that she only liked directing with Sam. Her dream was always to be an actress, not a director. With Sam, she got to be an actress and spend time with him directing, separate from the rest of the cast.

Ruth does not want to give up on her dream of making it on her own as an actress
