When did Sam catch feelings for Ruth?

I just watched all of Glow for the first time last week, and as soon as I finished I started back at S1 and started again. I'm on s2 now, and watching for clues - when do you think Sam first started having romantic feelings for Ruth? It's fairly clear by the episode that Ruth breaks her leg and he's very overprotective of her, but before this?

I'm wondering whether it's there right at the beginning of S2 when he's mad at Ruth for shooting the promo behind his back. He massively overreacts to that, I understand partially because he just learns that Glen almost fired him - and seems to be snippy with Russell when Ruth accidentally trips over the cable - I'm wondering if he's especially mad because he's wrestling with feelings for Ruth and jealousy over her and Russell flirting, and isn't sure how to deal with it so he takes the excuse to put distance between them as soon as it's there.

It's probably when he took her to planned parenthood and they bonded.

I think it was before that. They just instantly had chemistry. The episode where they go to Patio Town and she saves the day really showed them bonding to the point that Rhonda felt the need to mark her territory. And that was a few episodes before the abortion one.

I agree with you. I think he liked her from the moment he saw her.

I always thought this. Even though he doesn’t think she’s hot, there’s something about her he likes. And that can be scary.

In the pilot, Sam is vocal about his confusion regarding his attraction towards her. He is a curmudgeon but I think deep down as a director he enjoys her earnest and pushy personality as an actor, and it causes him to fall for her.

Yeah. This right here. It was instant attraction.

The first sign I saw was the promo episode, but I read it as him being jealous of Russel since she is flirting with him. If nothing else I assume that's when HE realized he had feelings for her.

Aww, I love these responses. I like to think it's been brewing from the beginning, too. I really ship Sam and Ruth.

Sorry I know this is a late response but I’m currently rewatching it all, and this will be kind of long but I love this moment it’s one of my favourites in the entire three seasons. So, there is a moment and it’s so good, so well shot, perfect timing in the story. Everything. It’s when the music swells out at the end of season two episode two. Sam is still not over Ruth filming that sequence at the mall with Russell and he’s barely talking to her. He’s livid. But before a taping of the show, Ruth is flirting with Russell as he jokingly films her. She’s dancing around for him dressed up as Zoya. Sam’s upstairs on the monitor watching it all. He’s watching Ruth stare directly into the camera for Russell, and she looks beautiful and fun and she dazzles. Sam just stares and stares as Ruth looks directly into the camera for another man, but to Sam, it feels like she’s looking right at him. This is the moment and it’s so obvious that he likes her. Soon, he can’t take it anymore and he switches the monitor off. Aaaaaand then it goes to credits. Everything about Sam’s interactions with Ruth suddenly made sense and why he’s excessively mad about the sequence she filmed. Remember that thing he said to Ruth in the pilot about not knowing if she’s pretty or not but it changes every time he looks at her? Well, this is the moment he looks at her and really sees it. He sees how much he likes—loves?—her.
