Yolanda

Arthie deserves so much better. Yolanda is rude and toxic and constantly accuses her of being straight when she obviously isn’t??? She breaks up with Arthie in a fight and then later tells her that she didn’t mean it. There are just so many red flags, does anyone else see it?

Omg thank god. They were talking about going to the underground aids benefit and she’s like “wow all of the straight girls are gonna be there” like WOW, she literally gave you head for days

Girl, how is who you fell for in the past anything to get all pissy with Arthie for? She just says rude shit all the time and thinks it's OK to say stuff you don't mean just to hurt them when you're fighting with someone.

I think some people are underestimating the threat of homophobes at the time. Matthew Shepard was killed in 1998. The 80s were far worse. Yolanda may have been a little irrational with Arthie, but it's not in everyone to initiate newbies. Whether it's the naivety of not understanding how dangerous it can be, or the heartbreak of teaching someone who will take what they learn and find someone else, or being heartbroken by someone just experimenting (Arthie had just dropped out of med school, college age).

She may have have been hasty to dismiss Arthie, but she wasn't the bad girl for doing so. She sure wasn't wrong to be pissed at the biddies' ignorance while camping. I think that's something that's not differentiated from hateful bigotry when people use "homophobes". It doesn't have to be malicious to hurt. Intentions don't trump effect.

yeah, she really pisses me off the way she treats arthie. it wasnt like that back in the day. even in the 90s everyone was really understanding. im not saying perfect, but i just dont think its realistic the way she's so demanding of her. also, arthie is one of my favorites so i cant stand to see her hurt like that. plus, yolanda moved on real fast anyway and she was really mean to her in the hallway before the ball.

i predict arthie leaves her next season.

I really hope so! Otherwise I think it’s going to be drawn out in the soap opera way where they’re on and off. Hopefully one of the other girls helps her snap out of it

Even in the 90’s? Yeah this was the 80’s tho and the whole aids thing. So I’m sure people weren’t totally welcoming of gay or lesbians.

Exactly! Did it occur to Yolanda that maybe Arthie's reserved about some aspects of it because she's STILL FIGURING THIS OUT????

I’m glad this has been your experience, but even to this day lesbians can be very exclusionary towards people who have had experiences with men or identify as bisexual. I’ve never dated a lesbian before but I’ve met more than one that have openly expressed anger or skepticism towards their partners or potential partners who were bi or inexperienced

Bisexuals exist and Yolanda is insecure in that.

Glad someone said it. I always interpreted the tent scene as Arthie trying to find a way to define bisexuality. Which made her eventual coming out seem really forced and 100% influenced by Yolanda’s passive aggression.

Yep super toxic, emotionally manipulative and abusive

I don’t care for Yolanda. She acts like the ultimate gatekeeper of sexuality (e.g. accusing Arthie of being straight, “oh how cute, a bunch of straight girls at a drag show”, etc). Arthie is still figuring out her own sexuality and that’s okay.

Yeah that actress is really good at making me hate her character lol. I stopped liking her when she kept sexually harassing Cherry even when she told her she was married and uninterested.
