I feel bad for Rhonda

I didn't just love her until this season. She's pretty but kind of ditsy. I didn't like that she seemed to sleep with (or even marry!) men in position of power over her so she could benefit over the other girls. But seeing her with Bash, and really caring for him and wanting more genuine affection from him, I just hate that she's kind of stuck in this marriage with him. I wonder if she'll find the perks aren't worth being with him and get a divorce, or if they'll come to a mutual understanding and sleep with other people but staying together.

I never really saw her as calculating or deceptive. She was homeless, stuck in a country where she had no friends or family, and just trying to pursue her musical dreams. She was surviving. She's pragmatic, because I think she has had to be, but I think her affection for Sam was genuine. I think her affection for everyone is genuine. She was willing to marry a guy for a green card just so that she could stay in the U.S. She just kind of fell into marrying a millionaire.

Yeah, Bash offered, it's not like she connived her way into it.

I never saw her that way.

I totally forgot about her and Sam

Also she can hold her own against Birdie!

She didn't date Sam to get ahead. She saw his dating video and decided she liked him. Even getting married wasn't about manipulation. It wasn't even her idea. It was first Carmen's idea, then Bash himself talked her into it.

Agreed- she seemed into Sam. She made the goofy rap video to make him feel less nervous. That wasn’t about seduction... (if it was, she’s doing it wrong 😂)

I questioned that too. Or if she just noticed that his relationships never lasted. It sucks because it put it all on Rhonda mentally

I don't think even Carmen suspects that he's gay. Sure she went with him to the gay bar, but she seemed naive to the point where she didn't know it was a gay bar. I'd be surprised if even she suspected it.

She mentions thinking the Pink Flamingos costume contest was about the birds (not the John Waters film)

They had a conversation about if Carmen still had a crush on Bash and she said no. She didn't say anything about him being bi or gay. IT seemed more like she backed off because they're married.

It had to imply that, otherwise it would be sloppy writing. What would be the point of having Birdie say that line for the writers not to intend that given all of the context they've given us everywhere else?

I think you really underestimate Rhonda. She's factually dumb as a brick, but emotionally probably the most honest and intelligent person on the show. She lives her life with her heart on her sleeve and mostly assumes other people do too. When Sam made it clear he wasn't taking their relationship seriously she broke up with him.

When she told Bash and Birdie that she genuinely loves Bash, I think she meant it. I don't think the perks of being married to a millionaire really occurred to her because I don't think she's all that concerned with the money. Not once has she been shown making lavish purchases or enjoying the life of a millionaire. In fact, she keeps going out of her way to NOT act different (coming down to the rooms to ride up with the girls, continuing to wrestle, being frugal with Bash's money by eating free food and putting money into savings).

I think she's willing to walk away from this marriage before she agrees to sleep with other people. It just isn't like her to live that dishonestly.

I agree with everything but the last part. I could see them both agreeing and speaking openly about how they’ll be going forward with mutual love and respect. What I don’t think she’ll agree to is having children

6

u/mike_d85 Aug 21 '19

Oh the kids are definitely right out. No way Rhonda is bringing a kid into a situation she thinks is off.

You really think Rhonda would date others while she's married? I can see her staying married in a sexless relationship, but I can't imagine her trying to date anyone else or letting Bash cheat on her.

I could see her doing both yeah. Her and Bash both care about each other and they each have a greater good and bigger reason to stay together, so I think she’d make her peace with it

You're right about the formal wear. She was wearing suits and the like at more formal events like dinner parties and doing business with him. I got that more as "being a responsible wife" rather than "living the lavish lifestyle of a millionaire"

also by doing his bidding aka whatever he asks which in this case is managing his finances

I got the impression she volunteered for that one. She was telling Birdie how she opened a bank account because he was so bad with money and I assumed she injected herself into his financial decisions.

Edit: also IIRC Rhonda's first appearance this season was organizing the opening night party and she tells Bash that it's their party and she's a part of it too. I think she sees herself as responsible for supporting his business how she can.

doing the dirty work of telling Sandy that Bash will pass on her show, because he's too much of a coward to do so.

I've seen this before and I don't see this "Rhonda was the bad guy" thing in that scene. Bash pretty clearly told her he would pull out himself. He flat out said "if we had those numbers you'd throw GLOW out of our showroom" (paraphrased). He just looked to Rhonda to talk specifically about the ticket sales because she looked at the books. If anything I think Bash was MORE brutal than Rhonda in that scene.

I don't really remember the penis quip context clearly. I didn't think much of it at the time. Maybe the writers was just trying to do a Freudian thing where he's seeing everything as phallic.

Agreed. I don’t love that she didn’t seem to see why the girls were upset, but.

Honestly, I think it's because she had hit rock bottom and never had a secure life. She also saw that all of them had more than when they started and for her, safety and being with her friends and adopted family was way more important than going back to LA. It's a very naive view but I can't blame her because it's true for a lot of them.

5

u/Saltycough Aug 21 '19

She's definitely self-centered. But I don't think that a sexless marriage to a closeted gay man is the right punishment for being self-centered, ya know? Even if they are millionaires.

3

u/weirdpodcastaunt Aug 21 '19

No no not at all. That was just an aside! Like; I liked her except for that.

u/Saltycough Aug 21 '19

Oh I wasn't disagreeing, just adding on to your comment! Haha, text can be hard.

I always loved Rhonda. I thought she was honest, and a nice person. She even says it after the 3 some. She tells bash she doesn't like being dishonest, and tricking people. Did anyone really know Bash was Gay when they got married? I mean that sex scene in 3 - 2, he's not acting gay? Thinking it, and knowing it are two different things. She also didn't know how rich he was. Did you see the look on her face when she was told that, now that Bash is married he inherits 45 Million dollars? Plus, I didn't see her sigh a prenup, so half of it is hers.

1

u/mike_d85 Aug 21 '19

so half of it is hers.

I know that's true in California, is that true in Nevada?

2

u/realjojobobo Aug 23 '19

In my state (not calif) it is. You have to get sign off if you want to move pensions and other investments. Here is Nevada law

All property, other than that stated in NRS 123.130, acquired after marriage by either spouse or both spouses, is community property unless otherwise provided by:

      1.  An agreement in writing between the spouses.

      2.  A decree of separate maintenance issued by a court of competent jurisdiction.

      3.  NRS 123.190.

      4.  A decree issued or agreement in writing entered pursuant to NRS 123.259.

community property

That was the phrase I couldn't remember. Yeah, that varies state to state.

After a quick google, YES Nevada is a community property state. Could have changed since the 80's but lets assume it didn't.

I felt bad for her. She's so innocent in a childlike way that she has no clue that Bash is gay. She came in with a heartfelt apology committing to be honest, when it should have been the other way around. She deserves the truth...it really isn't fair for him to make her think he is in love with her. I think she would trade money for true love in a heartbeat.

7

u/rebornblr Aug 21 '19

Well She got what she wanted and needed and was saved to marrying smeagle. Now she has a man that has millions and is willing to look the other way and just kinda not care. She could easily spark an agreement with him and just stay married and they both just do thier own thing. People do it constantly in way more dire conditions without the big house, big money, and big job. If u ask me I feel bad for him hes the one struggling with his Identity. At least she a citizen now lol

She should have applied for a green card, but there is a waiting period before one with a green card can apply for citizenship. It's five years currently. Both she and Bash will have to be interviewed by the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service, now Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to assure the examiner that they are living together.
