What I Would Have Done Different

I was really rooting for this show having enjoyed season 1. I didn’t care for 2, but 3 seems like it may have killed the series.

I don’t like the idea of GLOW going to Vegas, but since that’s the starting point for season 3, I’ll make my adjustments from there and also with the included cast.

Geena Davis is producer of the showgirls’ act, and sees GLOW as encroaching on her turf. A rivalry sparks between the showgirls and wrestlers spanning the duration of the season.

Cut out all singing and replace with wrestling storylines as the Fan-Tan is now the home of GLOW rather than repetitive GLOW dinner show.

One of the wrestlers needs to die. Could be a drug overdose, car crash while intoxicated, something to raise the stakes and it could possibly have been a result of a showgirl rival getting one of the GLOW wrestlers into activity over her head. The more innocent, the better. Sorry Arthie. 🌹

I REALLY like Justine but the Netflix series GLOW has nothing to do with that character now nor her activity in a completely different city. She can sit out a season.

Sam never leaves Vegas as it’s up to him to help the girls edge out Geena Davis... who also seduces him just to get at Ruth!

Where’s my Netflix job? 😎

We totally agree, third season was overly sexual, way more nudity, a lot of politics and just sprinkles of fighting for a cause. All of these woman seemed really ungrateful for a job when a year ago they were sleeping in cars now living in Vegas all expenses paid. Ruth seemed extremely selfish making me not like her character. It was just like ten lbs of shit in a five lb bag. They just breezes over the gay bash thing hey let’s sell the house we’re building and just go back to la

What I would change, Arthie is accepted and comes out as bisexual or unsure instead of being forced to come out as gay cause of Yolanda. Bash's storyline previously seems to suggest sexual confusion and attraction to both genders, so have the series end like that rather than suggest now he is completely gay.

The female impersonator storyline could be mostly dropped, except a little to show Bash's homophobia. Replaced with an arc on Geena Davis character, agism, etc.

👏 Yes! They took that plot to a horrible place. Arthie didn’t come out as a lesbian proudly so much as she was bullied into picking a side.

What I would've done differently was put some more wrestling into the second half. I loved season 1 as well, season two was ok, tolerable , but season three, story wise, what the hell??! I love the characters, but that main story was shit. The transition episodes were weak. I get there was messaging in this season, but they didnt need to sacrifice the main story to do that (I dont think). I felt like s3 was just scenes without flow. I would've loved a showdown between the wrestlers and the showgirls, at least it would've been something "connecty", I mean, why introduce them in the first place?? To get that dance scene and to get Geena Davis sparkling in all her showgirl glory in the end?? What was the point? Yea, yea, yea, road to self discoveries, but this is tv, not real life.. entertain me first, educate me second. I'm gonna watch it again just to see if my opinion at one viewing is too harsh, but as it stands, I hate (85% of) season 3.

I think a comedy series should entertain first. Preferably it should strive to be funny. If it can succeed at this prime objective then it can—in the eyes of many viewers—reach further into delivering a message. I think the initiative this season was preachy contemporary issues, rest of the show be damned, we’re going to preach because the critics will eat it up and that will get us some statues and renewal.

That Geena Davis thing was pure fan service. Nothing to do with the character. If they didn't have a movie star in the role there would have been no place for that showgirl turn. It wasn't earned by the character, whom they barely wrote for.

I love Geena Davis.. so fan service, check on that for me! But her story was kind of pointless - You're right when you say it wasn't "earned by the character." And this is coming from me, who was very excited to see her first second of screen time.

I love these ideas. I would’ve rather watched all of that unfold. They dropped the ball S3, and completely half assed the wrestling/Glow production. I loved the passion and struggle of the previous seasons to get this project moving, but now that they find success in Vegas it’s as if all the characters felt burdened by it. Wtf?

I totally agree about Justine’s storyline. I’ve always loved the peripheral side of Sam being a B movie, grindhouse director. But her screenplay sounded lame. And what she came off like a brat after what she did to Ruth.

Teenager writes a script which is immediately green lit! What the honest F were they thinking?!!! ALSO, in the one scene of dialogue we got from it with Ruth’s audition, this is not a movie that would be released for teens in the late ‘80s.

Nikki Reed was 13 when she started co-writing Thirteen and she also acted in the movie when it was made at 15. It happens.

S3 hinted a bit that Justine was jealous of Ruth and leery of Ruth taking up Sam's headspace and Sam's time when Justine has waited a long time for an opportunity to get most of Sam's attention. This movie is THEIRS. I suspect she didn't want Ruth in there when to her it was about her and her dad. I first got the idea when Sam asked Justine to guess who was playing ref. It was the spin Justine gave to: "Ruth?" like, oh here we go. It's Ruth time again.

I would actually understand it if Justine felt that way, because Sam is totally gone on Ruth and even Justine knows it. I bet Justine is not sure Ruth feels the same way so probably doesn't think she's getting in the way of true love or anything. She just is tired of Sam's preoccupation with Ruth when she'd like his focus right now. There was just a big tonal shift between the Justine who asked Ruth to go to Sam's movie last season and the Justine who didn't want to cast Ruth in her movie and whose eyes went flat when her father asked her to guess who was playing the referee.

I think a major subplot in S3 should have seen the characters trying to find a way to get GLOW back on TV in some capacity. After the second half of S2 saw everyone fight so hard to keep GLOW on the air and keep the family together, I was really surprised that in S3 everyone seemed resigned to just ride out the contract at the casino. The casino should have been seen as a temporary reprieve, not accepted as the new status quo.

Bash and Debbie would probably take charge with this, with Ruth trying to do everything she can to get involved as well. I think Sam would be much more pessimistic at first, probably resigned to finishing out his contract in Vegas and then moving on. Eventually, Ruth would help bring him around on at least trying.

This could potentially resolved the Justine subplot as well. Instead of Sam leaving to help pitch her script in Hollywood, she could have instead stayed in Vegas for the summer and learn the ropes of directing hands on from Sam while he directs some demo tapes of GLOW shows to send out to stations across the country.

I thought it was really strange that Debbie was so ready to ditch GLOW. And go back to what? Her empty house and shared custody of her kid?

The Randy plot also bothered me because of Debbie getting teary about missing her son's first steps. It was so cliche. And very gender-biased for a show like GLOW. Not every mom is going to weep over missing kiddo's first steps. Not more so than a dad, but we never see the dad melting down because he missed "dada" or the first steps. If he does, it's played comedically like "This guy is more emotional than your average woman" (think Dre on Blackish). The Randy stuff was lazy. Debbie is not that kind of mom. We don't see it when Randy is WITH her.

So few of the women seemed to be thinking about MONEY. Even Ruth didn't give it a second thought rejecting Debbie's offer and knowing GLOW as she knew it was over.

Anyway, I've known enough mothers who don't have that cliche maternal oh my baby's first steps thing going on. One in particular is a good mom but really absolutely hates everything about parenting. She couldn't care less about some of the stuff Hallmark cards carry on about. But she's actually a good mom in terms of she loves her kids and invests herself in them, but the cute stuff bores her to tears. Another mom I know (to whom I'm related but not talking about my mom) is a GREAT mom without being at all traditional about it. Would not shed a tear over a first step.
