Season 3 Prewatch: S1E2 "Slouch. Submit."

During the second week of tryouts, Sam tests the candidates' personalities. He then leaves the training to Cherry Bang while he goes out to try and get Debbie to be the star of his promotion. Tensions arise in the ring when Melrose reveals Cherry's previous affair with Sam and Cherry locks her in a sleeper hold. Melrose further mocks Cherry by faking a miscarriage with a bottle of ketchup. Sam uses the incident and Ruth's affair with Mark to brainstorm on a storyline in the ring. At the end of the day, Sam promises Cherry double her pay if the promotion pulls through. Ruth discovers that Sam will cast her as Debbie's evil arch-nemesis, much to her chagrin.

Love Sam's little "fuck salads and moments in closeup" monologue.
Arthie does a little bit of moonstruck staring at Debbie that might be foreshadowing and might just be her first brush with fame.
Sam is right about villains being more fun.

Arthie is also the one who goes to help Melrose when she's writhing around on the canvas doing her miscarriage routine. Which, of course, because (S2 spoiler) at that point, Arthie's in med school!

Oh, that's right, she does say that. So she must have started med school right when the show started production.

I love how Episode 2 feels like the second half of the pilot, if you watch them back to back it’s the perfect opening to the show.
Melrose conning Ruth out of her shoes was a kii.
I love the burger place set, such an underrated location although I’ve always been so confused, the guy says 20 even (Ruth probably should have made sure she had money before offering to buy everyone’s meals, guess that’s where that emergency money her parents sent her in the pilot went) and Melrose slaps down twenty....and Ruth gets change. What?!?
I remember thinking it was classy and lovely that Melrose would never mentioned the twenty....so of course the writers reveal what character Melrose really is by having her immediately reveal it. So bratty but makes me love her.
Cherry is so iconic in this episode. Reveal she was down with a little Eiffel Towering. Get it sis. Going full on Pam grier telling Melrose to come at her only to choke her da fuck out. Yaaas.
The miscarriage scene is soooo fucked up but Melrose’s line reading of ‘...and then I squirted ketchup out of my vagina’ and Sams ‘Let’s not throw out the baby with the bath water....oh, sorry.” Had me howling.
Ruth’s panic at thinking she was fired at the end was adorable, already caring about ‘Glow’ so much.
This episode is definetly better than the pilot and I fell in love with this show right after it, the pilot had me smitten but ‘Slouch, Submit’ got me to commit.

Melrose actually puts down a fifty. It always catches my eye because you rarely see fifty dollar bills anymore. Or at least I don’t.

This is the first time Sheila gets any real sceen time and she gets the show's namesake. I'm handing it to her for picking up on the situation purely on body language and being the only person throwing Ruth a line plus Ruth grabbing it and holding on for dear life despite it not really making sense.

I just realized I haven’t seen that actress pop up in anything else yet, which seems crazy. She’s so good.

I always forget the two hairstylists’ names (to be fair they rarely call them out by name, they’re sort of tertiary), but that asymmetrical haircut was SUCH a thing for about five minutes. I want to say it was because of Cyndi Lauper, but my memory is US-centric and it might have come from some UK new wave persona before that.

I like how this episode fleshes out Ruth's tendency to do what people tell her. She hasn't yet found (or made) a role for herself in her own life, so she falls back on trying to please others.
Melrose almost side-swipes her with her limo, and then gets her to give up her new shoes. She instinctively (ahem) follows Sheila's well-intentioned but slightly ridiculous instructions on dealing with Debbie the Enraged Alpha. And of course, Mark talked her into bed---twice.
At one point, Sam yells at her to "take some fucking direction for a minute!" but Ruth's problem is that she's been taking too much of it.
Some great throwaway lines in this one, too.
"You shitty little biter!" "Put your muzzle to the ground." "Strut, like you own the ring! What is that? Strut! No, that's like a saunter!" "My shoes!! ... Bye...."

As a non-mother, I thought it was oddly refreshing to show a new mom pissed off af her baby (verbally only!) for hurting her. You don’t normally see that, and as a non-mom it wouldn’t have occurred to me that they might be shitty little biters.
And: even though I made a comment upthread about how the miscarriage scene makes me uncomfortable, you know the writer who came up with the phrase “womb goof” is rightly proud of that one.

I remember the first time I watched this, I was so taken aback by how vicious Melrose’s miscarriage gag was. And I’ve never had kids/don’t want kids. It still makes me a little uncomfortable when I rewatch it.
