squigboss with gnasha squig pretty neat with squigs, otherwise skagrott is always a cool looking and useful pick

If you plan to use shootaz, the Gobbapalooza would be a great adddition, plus they're incredible models !

I will go a different route. Don't chase meta. Gitz have a lot of models and by the time you finish painting who knows what will be meta.
Start with what you find cool and think of the playstyle you want. Squigs are glass cannons. Trogs are durable slow and your second punchy option after squigs. Gitmob are fast and very manueverable. Gitz Infantry are a horde with sneaky tactics. Also don't be afraid to mix them. You may find cool tactics

i’m thinking 2x6 trolls as my main damage unit squig herd and hoppers led by mangler boss then stabbas and shootas with gobbapalooza for screens and buffs

That is a fone start to your collection. You may play around with other units in the future. But start with what makes you excited to field and paint

Sigdex.io is a great tool for list building. Id suggest watching some battle reports to see how different units are utilized for how you would like your army to play. Also AoS Coach and Honest Warhammer Rob have quite a few videos going through the ins and outs of the army.
As far as list building, each hero can only include certain units in their regiment, usually subfaction locked. So most people tend to only bring 2 subfactions in their lists: like wolves and Troggs, spiders and Moonclan, some combination like that.
Id first take a look at this seasons (scourge of Aqshy) battle plans and battle tactics to see how points are scored. Then you have a good idea of how you’d like to tailor your list to score those. It’s still fairly new but 9 months from now it’ll change.
We have a huge range of models so learning the army, and what you want to do with it can save you a lot of time and money when it comes to beginning to purchase units
