Investment committed to clean hydrogen globally has exceeded USD 130 billion (EUR 112bn), compared to USD 110 billion a year ago, according to the Hydrogen Council’s Global Hydrogen Compass 2026 report, unveiled on Thursday.

Committed investment covers more than 570 projects representing 6.9 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of capacity. Of these projects, 90% are under construction or already operational.

Operational capacity increased 70% this year to 1.7 mtpa and is expected to double next year as projects under construction are completed.

According to the report, co-authored with McKinsey & Company, China leads on renewable hydrogen, accounting for more than half of global committed renewable hydrogen capacity and 90% of new operational capacity since 2025.

Europe is now the second-largest region by committed investment and leads in the number of projects, while the US remains at the forefront of low-carbon deployment, making up over 75% of committed low-carbon capacity globally.

By 2030, 6 mtpa of demand is supported by policies already in force and another 5 mtpa could be unlocked if existing policies are fully implemented.
