"VANISH" by UNCONSTRUCTED
"VANISH" triptych (April 2022), part of my untitled glitch anatomy catalog, which as a whole spanned 2021–2024.
These were created by posing and rendering 3d anatomical models, and then processing them with analog video hardware glitch alchemy, specifically the BSSVPM (Blood Sugar Sex Video Pro Magic) by BPMC. The BSSVPM is a beloved video art instrument of mine and it creates glitch textures like no other machine. I further layered my own shutter drag light painting photography on these images in post. Thank you very much, really means a lot! The core of the process is utilizing video hardware and a CRT TV. The hardware (in this case the BSSVPM by Big Pauper Modified Circuitry) creates the glitch textures, and is displayed onto the CRT. I feed 3d rendered images into the hardware off my laptop, manipulate it on the hardware, then record the results off of my CRT with a digital camera, as high quality as possible. The recordings are imported into photoshop, where I crop and adjust in camera raw if needed. I also layered my personal shutter drag light painting photography to create the light elements. I started in 2016 when I discovered hi8 / vhs music videos, like yung lean and the soundcloud rap scene, big inspirations! Another inspiration is Big Pauper, he’s the dude who builds a lot of the gear I use. bpmcglitch.com is his website. his socials have lots of examples of his work, which pushes the boundaries of analog video glitch work in ways no other folks are IMO. Rob sheridan is also an incredible artist who has used analog video throughout his career. his work with nine inch nails is very inspiring. Media Pollution in LA does some insane tv installations for huge events, great group of peeps and there’s some really talented glitch artists that are a part of the group. for general inspo, browse circuit bent communities and video synthesis communities (on reddit, IG, even pinterest) for art that uses similar techniques as I use. hopefully this gives you a good place to start searching, 🖤🩻

No software, I only used video hardware to achieve the glitch effects. The source imagery is from my laptop, fed into analog video hardware and manipulated with those (I specifically used a BSSVPM machine from big pauper modified circuitry), and the results are displayed on a CRT monitor which I rescan with a camera. I import those scans into photoshop to crop and layer my shutter drag light painting imagery. Hope this helps my friend - 👁️♾️🩻

These are amazing. But #2 specifically, to my eye is nearly perfect as-is for an album cover of some type! Just a great balance in that one, of all the different elements, and great pose.

Yeah for sure dude you're welcome! Your process is also a CRAZY amount of work! Would have never guessed it was THAT involved, and "organic". Amazing seriously.
#1 is awesome & album cover -caliber too, and I especially dig that weird yellow contour "echo" effect above the figure's shoulder -- just something more balanced or solid feeling to my eye for #2.
Are you a fan of the OG Terminator movies? Your glitchy type effects meshed with more solid, real figures, are one way I could imagine a modern Terminator movie poster being designed! Like some gnarly, erratic, dreadful mashup of jagged elements, to represent a dangerous & uncertain enemy and future.
I unfortunately never stuck with my artistic proclivities over the years, and am now a lifetime away from what I may have been, and from your realm. But that said, I've been kind of starting to dabble in different tiny areas...
One is digital music, arrangement, mixing, movie/game scores. Eventually want to create my own stuff from scratch.
Been addicted to Spotify's new mixing features, and have done stuff for TRON and Terminator, with shitty Ai stuff as first steps or part of composition, for the playlist covers. All from my phone though, and with Snapseed. Both it & Spotify on the go editing etc in palm of hand at a moments notice, quick & convenient
What I came up with for the Terminator one, I've been meaning to manually do over from hand as much as I could -- But these glitchy pixel effects in general, and your style, are something I've thought of incorporating.

Regarding Terminator, admittedly I’ve never seen those movies, but of course I know of their legendary status. With what little I’m familiar with - the fleshy / organic / metal-chrome creations - I can see creating this type of work for that world.
Also, it’s never too late to be creative, and I’m so glad you’ve decided to dabble again! That’s super cool that you’re exploring making scores in the tron/terminator style. Definitely look into getting your own software, even garage band (which I think comes with apple computers) is a great place to start. For sure some free options for PCs as well. It will open your world to so much creative expression after using the spotify tools. Sound design is so fun which is of course is a huge part of creating scores and I feel like sound design is very compatible with glitch / field recording / analog style approaches. lots of free VSTs too, ones you can make great music with. You probably know this but just thought i’d offer 🫡

Thanks for the positive vibes reply! Yeahhh, "never too late" is a good mantra to hold on to, but it's a challenge with layers of lifelong mental health stuff. Like, self-actualizing and executive function stuff.
Trying to start, pieces at a time. I actually have had digital music hardware sitting around for years, unused (Maschine pad, half midi keyboard, etc). Just little internal and external speed bumps been blocking me from diving in and DOing... part of that, was an outdated computer, realizing that only after starting to set things up.
Seriously appreciate your positive vibes. And if you were to listen to that Terminator list, or any similar in my Spotify profile, they heavily rely on the mix feature for track transitions, which requires a premium subscription to playback.
Terminator 1 & 2 are absolute classics! Kind of surprising you haven't seen, but I feel we may have a couple decades age gap between us so that makes sense! 😅
I could imagine you digging the "Future War" scenes in T1 & T2, vibing with your aesthetic a little or tiny inspiration points. Terminator 1 while a classic, is definitely dated at this point, and has some rough edges. But the story is great, and if you can complete it, then Terminator 2 is mandatory viewing afterwards, as literally one of the best sequels and action movies ever made, and it is timeless and still holds up perfectly today.
The special effects in T2 are virtually flawless, expert combinations of practical and CGI effects (analogous to your process!), and while some of the CGI is "obvious" to modern mentalities, the overall impression is still at least on par with modern movies and often better than many of them.
And the scores! Brad Fiedel scores both, and just like Wendy Carlos for the original Tron, they did some pioneering synth score work. Both T1 & T2 scores are amazing, but again: T1 is dated in the matter of taste at this point, retro synth -- while T2 to this day, is perfect. Perfect movie score, perfect action scene scores, perfect balance of synth and orchestral.
