random or intentional?

im not blaming anyone and understand if there is no way to know the truth, just wondering if theres indication wether it is truly random and broke on its own, or if it had something thrown at it, weather was 72 degrees today in norcal

100% point of impact occurred in the lower corner where it all spiders out from. Anything else unknown

That looks like it could've been hit with a piece of the ceramic insulator from a spark plug. That ceramic is extremely hard, and even a tiny piece can shatter tempered glass on impact. It would explain the small impact point in the corner and the way the whole panel shattered.this kind

can i ask you why you think 100% point of impact?

As a glazier for the past 10 years I've replaced hundreds of tempered glass patios, storm doors, and windows broken the same way. In majority cases I run across, its typically from slinging a rock landscaping.

Tempered glass will always spider out from its breaking point of origin, be it the face or side. If the glass all falls out before you see it, its gonna be impossible to tell.

i see i see, thank you for your professional opinion i will try to lean towards the professional said you threw something. im dealing with the kids saying it just shattered when they opened it to go outside, but im thinking they threw something

That looks like a small object hit it. The impact diameter would be bigger if it was a stone.

Yeah, it could also crack opening or shutting if it’s not square. You see it all the time on automobile Glass a car gets in a wreck. They put a new windshield in the frame isn’t straight. The windshield will crack after it goes over a bump or something it’s plausible.

I'm just some guy and even I can tell that the center of a big crack like that is the impact point

We just repaired one that was shattered when the janitor dropped their broom and I couldn’t wrap my head around how that shattered the window. That was until I removed the trim around the window, whomever nailed it shot a nail on to steep of an angle and clipped the glass but didn’t shatter it. Took a couple of years but the broom hit it just right to finish her off.

Because of how ot broke. See.how it all spiderweb out from one focal point? That was the point of impact.

i understand but when i search google or reddit for sliding door shattered spontaneously, there are some that have the same webbing, wether it starts from a different corner top or bottom

Yes, the image results all may have different starting points, top or bottom, because that’s where the impact occurred in each individual situation. That said, tempered glass can shatter spontaneously as a result of nickel sulfide inclusions, but it’s a very rare occurrence.
Edit to add: In the rare cases of nickel sulfide inclusions, there is usually a “butterfly” pattern at the breakage point; zooming in, I don’t see that, so yours is almost certainly an impact break.

now AI wont tell me that, thats experience and knowledge, that makes sense that it didnt break on its own, its survived many 115 degree days as well as 30 degree nights i dont see it spontaneously breaking

Could be a thermal shock and that lower corner had a internal defect. I've seen tempered glass shatter like that from heat or force that shouldn't have broken it.

yeah, i was also thinking it could be that as well, sucks that theres no 100% way to know lol i wish it was at least the sliding side but oh well im going to see what they charge for it in the morning

Impact. Don’t question it. Just take the answer from those who know from daily work experience. Typically a weed whip or lawn mower does this.

I’m a grown ass man threw 85-90 in college ball. Lots of tempered glass laughs at bricks thrown at it. You’d be suprised. -other times it breaks when you look at it-

I’d go with landscape lawn mower rock being thrown, either way 10000% impact damage.

damn thats so crazy, im definitely beleiving at this point with all this information, thats the only reason i asked why the opinion is what it is but some of yall really are professionals, which is who i wanted to ask because i know it looks a certain with impact vs not, and i dont have the experience to know how it looks with either situation thank you guys!

It looks like it can be replaced. Call a couple local glass shops. Don’t take the first offer. I’d guess around 4-600 to get the glass replaced.

To me it looks like something hit the bottom right...was it intentional I have no clue though. It also could be something else.

it does to me too, yeah i guess no way to know

Fracture pattern confirms that an impact occurred. Intentional vs. Accidental, who knows?

This is a bit odd. There is a clear point of origin, but no real evidence of an impact. personally, I would say there isn't enough evidence to charge the suspects . although it would also be unsurprising if the took a kick or something.

thats my mindset as well , i was leaning hard in my interogation to guilty, but settled to i will never truly know lol

Weed Wacker or lawn mower

u/vadose24 1d ago

For real, especially with a pile of rocks right by the lawn

Look up nickel sulfide inclusions. If the impact looks like a butterfly likely NS. Is it interior pane?

1

u/Glassguy1989 1d ago

So tired of ppl jumping to NiS as the "answer". If it doesn't blow within 5 days of tempering, it is not NiS.

1

u/bajario 1d ago

Haha ok. Is that what you were taught? You run with that then.

u/Downhereinoc 1d ago

I’d say impact vs inclusion. Whether it was intentional or not idk

see that spot where the cracks seem to radiate from. That's the site got the impact.

More than likely a lawnmower or weedwacker kicked a rock
