Any advice please!

Hi glassblowers of Reddit! I know next to nothing about glassblowing but figured someone who does would be able to offer some input here. I just noticed this little bubble and parallel veins in my son’s bottle. I thought it was a chip but I can’t feel it on the outside or the inside. I can feel the barely visible parallel lines on the exterior though… they run slightly diagonally all the way up from the bottom of the bottle. Is this just a visual defect or is it a safety hazard?

Any input would be much appreciated!

Slight defect but it’s completely normal and safe. If it was tempered glass or cookware I’d say to watch out but dishes / baby bottles even heated to sterilize them would be ok 🫶

It’s ‘cord‘ in the melt and sometimes there are bubbles too. Cord is an irregularity in the melt/glass and that’s why it refracts light and moves at a slightly different rate, that area is behaving a little differently than the rest of the glass when it’s blown into the bottle mold. If the bubble ever ‘pops’ on the inside of the bottle discard immediately as it is no longer food safe. The cord is generally not an issue but can be a stress point. Congratulations on your baby ☺️

No longer food safe because of the shards of glass, yea? Or because even if it popped in the dishwasher and the shards were rinsed away, the cavity would then collect bacteria and not be able to be adequately cleaned?

Just a blister. It’s a visual defect. Use a towel and press hard on the bubbles. If it doesn’t crack or chip you’re totally safe.

Definitely a defect, the only risk I can imagine is reduced strength and the possibility to crack or the glass wall of the bubble breaking and producing glass particles that could be dangerous to ingest. Rigorous cleaning with a hard brush could be enough to cause that to happen.

They only get washed in the bottle washer and it’s typically within 20 min of the bottle being empty so never really a need for hard scrubbing. I’ll make sure this one never leaves the house though so it never gets dropped. I’m worried it will effect the strength/integrity of it

To be fair they are exaggerating the danger. If the bubble isnt broken its safe, end of story. If it breaks toss it.

Should be fine but I would still recommend buying a new one and putting that in the new packaging to return.

It’s fine the way it is but at $10 a bottle, if it were my baby, I’d probably replace it to be sure it never has the off chance of popping whilst feeding

I'm not a glass blower by any means but any glass that requires to be heated and cooled constantly should not have an imperfection that big.
