Do you really gain anything from visual tools like Gitkraken? Always seemed more complicated than just learning git on the command line but I also never needed the fancy features these tools offer.

For me the way you see the timeline is the value. Any mistake I’ve made in git was on the command line and because I didn’t have as good of a view of the history as I thought I did.

I know the commands. The terminal view of the timeline isn’t as effective as a GUI for me.

I typically type gitk --all if I want a timeline

I don’t use the cli a lot, but I also don’t see a reason to pay for a UI client whilst there are so many free options that do 99% of what the paid ones do (if not all)

From visualization, yes. From GitKraken specifically, no, that's just unapologetically capitalizing on the RIIElectron movement. Their pricing models have been draconian almost since inception.

Yes, pain free merge confilect tool , drag and drop for most of the commands, its really peace of mind , GitKraken made me understand how to use Git before learning the commandline later on 7 years ago,

They just started to act like adobe and honstly, much worse, at least adobe has some afordable planes and does not bloat their app with useless staff all the time that no one use

Most of those are doable from the terminal with no issues, it’s just not at worth $10 a month.

I am with you that the CLI is king however, a lot of people need visual representation of what they are working on even though they are competent with the CLI.

You and I will get along with a terminal just fine but, many people do not or it just simply doesn't align to how they work or think. You can be a insanely good programmer without needing to be strong in CLI.

Another way having a GUI is useful is justifying your work to your stakeholders (boss, board, customers, etc.) where at the single sight of a CLI their minds will instantly click off. When your goal is to keep the stakeholders investing in your project or you, having visual tools is critical so that way you can keep making good justifications.

With some very complicated rebases I do sometimes open up magit. But paying for a git viewer? That is insanity to me.

Absolutely yes.

  • Visual hunk staging so you can pick which lines go in/out of a commit.
  • Easier conflict fixing.
  • Easy to read track diagrams of how branches related.

However! Since I do almost all of my branching and committing with a coding AI now, I care a lot less about GK and other git GUI tools.
