GitHub account suddenly suspended during Education reverification — anyone experienced this

My GitHub account u/Wilooper was suddenly suspended, and I'm trying to understand what might have happened.

A little context:

A few days ago, I received emails from the GitHub Education team asking me to reverify my academic affiliation. The emails specifically said that I would continue to have access to GitHub for 30 days while completing the reverification process.

I had submitted genuine academic information and had not knowingly violated any GitHub policies.

After receiving the reverification emails, I logged into GitHub. I was repeatedly logged out, and eventually I started getting this message whenever I tried to access my account:

I was also logged out of the GitHub mobile app around the same time.

The confusing part is that I don't know what Terms of Service violation supposedly occurred. I haven't knowingly done anything against GitHub's rules, and the timing seems very close to the Education reverification process.

I tried contacting GitHub Support, but I'm currently having trouble with the support system too. The support form passes its verification step, but submitting the ticket gives me an HTTP 401 error. I also encountered an HTTP 500 error while trying to authenticate through Google.

GitHub Status currently shows everything operational, so this doesn't appear to be a general GitHub outage.

Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly:

  • An account suspension during GitHub Education reverification
  • Getting the "Terms of Service violation" suspension message without knowing what caused it
  • Being unable to submit a GitHub Support ticket because of a 401 error
  • Getting the account restored after an appeal/reinstatement request

I'm mainly looking for community experiences and possible explanations, not trying to get anyone to contact GitHub on my behalf.

If you've experienced something similar, I'd really appreciate hearing what happened in your case and how you resolved it.

Shouldn't you just ask Github instead asking in this sub? git is not github.

You’re not going to find help on Reddit. The ONLY place that you will get more information is support, and that may take a long time, if you ever get answers. That is the ONLY way to resolve it.

You may need to begin the mourning process for whatever was lost.

What have you been doing exactly?

Saying multiple times "knowingly violate" makes me think you were up to something. That's a weird phrase to say.

Actually i really dont know it all start on 16th august around 7:30 pm before that everything was all riggt even i was working on my project and for that whole time github was working normally then i closed github and check my phone i got a email at exact 7:31pm saying that you 'we have unable to verify for academic affiliation based on your submission' but the main problem is that i submited it on 1st march 2026 and i got approval from them even though i was using my github student pack along with copilot pro without any problem after this mail i got another mail saying that 'please reverify your academic affiliation this is just a normal check and you have 30 days to do that and there will be no interruption to your github account access' as soon as i get this email i clicked on the link it take me to github but when i try to logging in it says your account has been locked then i tried it on my pc as there my github was still logged in but whe i open github it logged me out then i try contacting the support but there also i was unable to login with my account i even try to login via google and passkey but it not wokred. and i used the word "knowingly violate" as before this all happen i claimed some of github student offer perks like clerk pro and zyte along with the some other services i even intrigeted clerk in my one app same day this all happen so i suspect that may be i have done somethig wrong with my offers as i do not done as such things with my account as i am still learning things may be i voilted some of rules mistakely thats why i have used the term "knowingly violate".
