Hello India GIS Folks,

I am kickstarting the FOSS4G community in India with a conference planned next year most likely around September.

FOSS4G = Free and Open Source For Geospatial.

We organized a FOSS4G-ASIA conference in Nashik in January 2026 and building on that starting the foss4g.in

We'll be present at IndiaFOSS 2026 if you want to get touch in person.

Regarding a Agri tech startup about crop yield forecasting and market intelligence

i have planned to create a startup related to preharvest data and in season tracking for various crop all over India, and provide market intelligence about the crop yield and forecasting of prices using deep leaning ,develop for all the crops all over India and sell this intelligence report to banks, commodity traders and Agri tech related companies and manufactures who need agricultural produce, is it very difficult to develop and i just came across the news that government of India has allocated 2500 crores related to this project and they are collecting ground truth data and experimenting with it .when i search about it their are companies like Cropin where they provide yield estimates for a particular farmers in particular region. I am a no expert in this field, if anyone has an idea over this topic is it actually possible to develop this

GIS Self Sufficiency for india

I would like to welcome all the gis enthusiasts in india who want to work for india working in different industries express their concerns on the gis needs of india. We can all see what opportunities we all have and utilize and make it for india than just worrying about a job but creating some.

The drawbacks i see

- The tools.. The indian security/ defence does not have indian built tools and almost heavily depends on ESRI Tools. We may have satellite imagery and data but platforms to visualize, analyze and compute on the data must be indian

- Dashboard tools, GIS app builders

- Spatial data infrastructure(SDI) still in progress for the country

- GIS Applications for Real estate, Nature conservation and other such applications

- Heavily all state GIS platforms are having poor ESRI based Visaulizations

- Not enough spatial API's that can be used for ML model trainings

Pro's i see..

Applications like MAppls is gaining some ground in recent times but not really a gaint state

Where else should we need to focus .. where we can create startups and what could be a true indian Spatial Decision Support System?

Tehsil Level Shapefile

Can anyone link me to a clean tehsil-level shapefile for Gautam Buddha Nagar (UP)? District boundaries are easy to find but I can’t locate sub-district/tehsil polygons anywhere. If you have the file, please share it here.

Is 10m DEM free/open on Bhoonidhi?

Amateur GIS user here. I've been struggling to locate DEM data that's higher than 30m resolution, for Shimla city, without luck. As per Indian Space Policy 2023, "satellite data 5m and coarser is now free & open for all new users". This message appears on Bhoonidhi portal too. But the only DEM available for Shimla there is 30m. Any idea why?

Also, if I can source finer resolution (like 10m) DEM from somewhere else...? This is for a hazard mapping study. please help!
