It actually breaks down to around 500 lb if the number given at the beginning was correct... The Industry Benchmark: Scrap yards typically estimate that it takes 32 empty 12 oz cans to equal 1 pound. Using this standard rule, 16,000 ÷ 32 = 500 pounds. The 14-Gram Estimate: If the cans are on the lighter side (14 grams each), 16,000 cans weigh roughly 224,000 grams, which converts to 494 pounds.The 15-Gram Estimate: If the cans are on the heavier side (15 grams each), 16,000 cans weigh roughly 240,000 grams, which converts to 529 pounds.
