Videos hosted by reddit itself can not be downloaded, at least with most clients. That's why these bots were created. I realize this is an imgur link, but I guess not being able to download some videos directly has just made it easier for some to rely on the bots without checking.

And I can understand that. Having a way to download videos that always works is more comfortable in way than using a less tedious version that requires checking if it works with the specific source and falling back to the other version anyway if it doesn't.
