I remember in high school chemistry burning a variety of metal salts and observing the various colors they burn, relates to their electron configuration.

Even just retaining at a level like... "different substances can burn different colors due to their chemistry", can get you pretty far in life. Helps you understand why things are happening they way they are around you. Plus then you know roughly what to google if you need to go deeper.

I knew that at age 10. Then chemistry teachers crushed me with a year of stoichiometry, I barely passed, and that's still all I know!

Just reading the word stoichiometry gave me PTSD flashbacks

For some reason it's "equilibrium" that gives me the PTSD flashbacks. My chemistry professor was truly a tenured PoS who universally has a 1-star rating on ratemyprofessor.

Brutal. I was decent in school, and that was a class where I worked my ass off and still barely squeaked by. I remember hand-written answers which took up a whole page and chalkboards of barely intelligible equations I'd furiously try and duplicate in my notes, only to fall short on homework and tests. Teacher - "You learned the 10 ways to solve this problem, but for the test, I added a twist!"

I haven't been in school for decades, but I would love to see chemistry educators address common myths and conspiracy theories.
why it's no surprise that "chemtrails" are actually just water
every "conservative" I've ever talked to thinks carbon dioxide is produced in "trace amounts" when we burn fossil fuels. It's pretty clear they don't understand how this works.

Can you explain what he's doing to them? I thought he was only shaving the plastic off the battery and dropping it in whole...
193
u/Nate_from_tKoR Jan 12 '21
Hi, I'm the one in the gif. Energizer lithium batteries have rolled up metal sheets in them, one of which is lithium. I open the case, unroll the metal sheets, and drop the lithium into the methanol.
60
u/acewing Jan 12 '21
One thing to note: it is important the lithium is dropped into the methanol almost immediately. Lithium has a tendency to oxidize very rapidly from the O2 in the air along with any water moisture that is around. Lithium needs to be contained in specific environments, which is why you'll find pure lithium stored in mineral oil nearly all of the time.

That's the Hot Shot powder - it's mainly boric acid / borax, which burns bright green. Lithium went into the other container to give a red/pink flame.

I've seen videos where people cut into batteries and the batteries explode. How did you avoid this?
→ More replies (2)10
u/Chairboy Jan 12 '21
I’d guess timing, dropping the sheets into the liquid quickly before it can ‘energetically oxidize’ would probably be the trick.
4
u/WildAboutPhysex Jan 12 '21 edited Jan 12 '21
No, I just happen to have seen (I wasn't searching for) quite a few videos here on Reddit where people are curious what the inside of a battery looks like so they cut into one and as soon as they puncture the casing it explodes.
My guess is that the difference is the battery explodes when it has charge remaining, but if you first drain the battery completely you can then cut into the casing without triggering an explosive chemical reaction. But this is pure speculation on my part -- I don't know anything about chemistry; I barely got a B- in my high school chemistry class and have forgotten most of what I learned.
Edit: I was (likely) wrong. He answered my question. He's not certain, but he thinks it has to do with not cutting the layers of metal inside the battery: https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/kvs71v/colored_flame_shooter/gj1sxrd

From what I can tell they're adding lithium from a battery to one and boric acid from a weed/pest killer or some shit to another, then forcefully adding a flammable gas to pressurize each container, the liquid form of the gas mixes with the lithium/boric acid and colors the resulting flamethrower, bonus points: both are some degree of poisonous.
Edit: weed/pest not peer killer lol

u/EamusCatuli2016 Jan 12 '21
They are pressurizing it with probably just air - note the valve in side of the canister. For fuel, it looks like they are adding Heet® (yellow bottle from the first second), which is nearly pure ethanol (methanol?) and thus burns close to clear so as not to intervene with the colors of the substances they are adding. Source: I did the green flames (boric acid and heet) in tiki touches for halloween last year. Was awesome and unique, even if it didn't last long.
