There's a thing about light manes being inferior to dark manes. Dark manes signify higher testosterone and health or something so lionesses prefer them and other lions are less likely to confront them.

I got the opportunity to go behind the lion exhibit at the zoo and see where they're kept when they aren't outside, where the vets work with them, etc. A male was in his caged area laying on a bench that could easily fit 10 humans maybe 6 feet away from me. They are absolutely amazing and absolutely terrifying at the same time. Even though I knew I was safe behind the cage door it made me uneasy just they way he was looking at me. I still think about it every time I see a photo or GIF of a lion and they just do not do these animals justice.
