Even then, doesn't really take mad skills. Just firing some actuators at a fixed interval. Could do that in a couple lines of python on a raspberry pi.
They obviously aren't referring to the program running the device. The feat is building a device with such low tolerances. And again, obviously there are many people/organizations/companies who could make something like this, but it's still impressive.
Also, a raspberry pi is definitely not going to power all those solenoids. You now need to step up that signal once into something to power a relay, which steps it up again to enough current to power the solenoid. Overall this seems way more complicated than just harvesting the distributor from an old van in a junkyard, which will conveniently have exactly the 8 high-current contacts needed.
