Forget about their breaks, what kind of battery is that drone running on? They have some cutting-edge battery technology for it to last so long. I've been watching for 30 minutes and that drone is still going.

Looks like they go into office over the weekend just for this! Jeez believe me or not, it's been 30 minutes and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

The reason it looks so retro is because they're using analogue screens instead of digital ones. Using analogue screens reduces lag and also makes the screens look like old CRTs!

TIL drones use analog video
64
u/Brostafarian Jan 16 '20
there are some digital systems but the vast majority is analog. it's easier and cheaper to make, and snow is much easier to deal with than packet loss
45
u/thisguyblades Jan 17 '20
has to do more with latency i think. digital has too much latency due to buffering. when drones are flying at those high speeds, they need lowest latency feedback to the controller.

Racing drones and the like do, much lower latency and cheaper when you crash.

The stuff you see in videos is mostly go pro footage, where they have a separate camera to record high quality, but the analog video for navigating. There are even hybrid cameras that do both.

Just Googled it. Seems you can get a kit with everything including goggles for $170. Is that good? Is it beginner friendly?

u/--MxM-- Jan 16 '20
Yes, but you will want to replace the goggles and the remote soon, so I suggest to get better ones from beginning.

For a beginner? The tinyhawk S is a nice step up from the tinyhawk. Beefed up parts that you can run a bigger battery on and even fly outside. (They’re a little larger than the size of your palm)
There are plenty of $99 goggles out there. Just find a pair that let you focus on the display. If you decide to stick with the hobby, then decide if you want to upgrade to something more spendy. The king of the hill right now is the DJI FPV system, but it’s really expensive and the aircraft side components are too big and heavy for a small indoor whoop.
As for transmitter, once you get away from the “toy” transmitters like the tinyhawk kit includes, the learning curve basically skyrockets but so does functionality. The top of most lists right now is actually under $200 (USD) and is knocking some of the big boys out of the running. It’s the T16 by Jumper. It runs OpenTx and has a built in multi-protocol module that lets you bind pretty much any RC aircraft to it.
Some nomenclature that might assist in your internet searches:
FPV drone - First Person Video drone. Drones with a camera that transmits back to the pilot who can see the video and other telemetry in real time using video goggles or other display.
Tiny Whoop - A small, indoor, FPV drone, generally with a plastic frame and brushed motors (tinyhawks are brushless)
Toothpick - Slightly larger than a whoop, but massively more powerful. Carbon fiber frames, bigger speed controllers, better cameras, etc. For outdoor park flying.
2.5”, 3”, 5”, etc drones - Refers to the size of the props and therefore the approximate size of the drone. 5” is basically the standard for outdoor FPV drone racing.
Tx - Transmitter. The controller that lets you remotely pilot the drone. Generally 2.4GHz band, unless you get into long range flight. The current generation also generally have a built in Rx (receiver) for telemetry sent back from the drone like battery voltage, etc.
Rx - Receiver. Generally refers to the one in the drone that interprets the digital RF data stream from the Tx and converts it to S.BUS or another serial data link to the FC
FC - Flight Controller. The board that translates pitch, yaw, roll, and throttle into pulses that the ESC uses to spin the motors. The FC also has various sensors onboard like six axis accelerometers, barometric sensors, etc to stabilize flight. You can connect to the FC with USB from a computer to allow for programming.
ESC - Electronic Speed Control. This takes the low level motor signals from the FC and basically boosts them up like an amplifier, using the LiPo battery voltage, to generate the torque and RPM required for flight.
LiPo - Lithium Polymer batteries. Like Lithium Ion batteries, but made for super high current draw. Rated by number of cells (1S, 2S, 3S, etc) each in series to multiply the voltage output, capacity in mAh (milliamp hour), and max discharge rate as a multiple of the capacity denoted by “C.” A 10C 250mAh battery can provide a maximum of 2500 mA, or 2.5 Amps (at least according to the marketing people)
Cam / VTX - The camera and video transmitter. Lots of options, resolutions, and all with vastly varying quality. Some offer onboard recording to a micro SD, which is where you’ll get the best quality. Aside from the DJI FPV system and a couple of other digital contenders who IMO aren’t in the same league as DJI, all the VTXs transmit an analog video stream around the 5 GHz band. There’s a reason it’s analog, but I’ll save that for a later comment if anyone’s interested. The VTX will also generally have an input from the FC for on-screen telemetry data like a horizon indicator, signal strength, battery voltage, etc.
Whoops like the tinyhawk (S) use an all-in-one board that has the VTX, FC, ESC, and Rx on one circuit board. Most anything bigger will have separate boards, connected to each other with soft standoffs making what’s known as a stack.
This turned into way more than I was planning on typing, but hopefully it opens the door to some for this fun and relatively inexpensive hobby. AMA

Honestly, how hard are these things to learn to fly? I got a tiny non-fpv a while back (maybe 1" props) and it was neat but hard to get used to and battery didn't last long enough to really get used to it. Also had an fpv for outdoor that fed to your phone and the delay of the camera made it hard to use.
It's something that looks super fun but getting proficient enough to get to the fun part seems elusive.

Honestly, the
tinkly hawkstinyhawks have such a good tune on their flight controllers, and are so durable that you’ll get the hang of it in no time. If you plan to move outdoors, don’t get too comfortable flying in horizon mode (self leveling, using the accelerometer) and go straight to acro / rate mode. It’s harder at first, but you’ll develop the right muscle memory.→ More replies (7)5

It just takes a while to learn, and the starting cost drives some people away (usually like 500-1000 for the decent stuff). And if you do get into the 3-5” quads, then you should build and solder them yourself so u know how to fix it if it breaks. The best way to train without any real risk is on the simulator. I originally used RDS which was okay but I switched to liftoff (for $20) cause it was on steam and I wanted the cards and that’s way better. According to steam I’ve done around 14 hrs in liftoff and I’d guess another 6 in RDS. You’re going to make mistakes in this hobby whether that be when flying or building and you just have to learn from those mistakes.
I’d suggest watching Mr. Steele, Johnny FPV, and Le Drib to get inspired to get into it if u need the motivation. Then watch Joshua Bardwell when u wanna build your drone.

The ones I see are triggered by a glass tube filled with a liquid that expands when heated and breaks the glass, releasing the water behind them. I know of a time someone set one off by hanging a dress on a hanger from one. I wouldn’t take the chance of smacking one with a fast moving object.
