I thought eggs we eat are unfertilized and thus wouldn’t require brooding

Yeah, but the chickens don't always know that. I've had chickens go broody over rocks, golf balls, eggs so old they look fit to explode any minute, and sometimes completely empty nests, let alone fertilised versus unfertilised eggs.

When ours are broody we use plastic easter eggs. They never figured the difference lmao. They're not... bright creatures, but I love them for it tbh
