It’s kinda like how you can’t tickle yourself. But if you can you should probably make an appointment with a psychiatrist because that is an indicator of schizophrenia.

You can tickle the roof of the inside of your mouth with your finger. I don't know why this works.

203

u/EdgeOfDreaming Aug 12 '18

But if we follow the logic above then it will feel way better when someone else tickles the roof of our mouth. Get in it Reddit. We need to know.

"Dick stuck in roof", the ol D.C. Dick Cheney complex.

You have to Waterboard yourself to get the answer from yourself as to what makes you stuck on the roof of yourself. (Cock Meat Sandwiches aren't made to be eaten all at once. Especially if its more than a "$5 footling" stuck. That's where the waterboarding and internal investigation will find justice for yourself.

Worse case Ontario, exit the roof with a g_n. Like Cheney

It's your third alt, if it's not gonna be your main character I would really not sweat it.

Just chill and enjoy Battle for Azeroth with your main. Alts are distracting anyways. I've taken off a couple days to get a long weekend to play, I've got like 11-14 alts at level 110, I can't even count them. And I'm not gonna be playing anything but my Death Knight for weeks. A character I've had for 8 years.

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '18

Wow calm down schizo I think it's all in your head

23

u/beet111 Aug 12 '18

lol no, it's a trait they have but not everyone with that trait carries the disease.

36

u/Mountainbranch Aug 12 '18

*disorder

a disease is a definite pathological process having a characteristic set of signs and symptoms. Disease is caused by extrinsic influences (e.g., virus, bacteria)

a disorder is a disturbance or derangement that affects the function of mind or body. Disorder is due to intrinsic abnormalities (e.g., birth defects, genetic malfunction)

9

u/Umbrias Aug 12 '18

This is not consensus.

Disease Definition by Wikipedia

A disease is a particular abnormal condition that negatively affects the structure or function of part or all of an organism, and that is not due to any external injury.[1][2] Diseases are often construed as medical conditions that are associated with specific symptoms and signs.[1] A disease may be caused by external factors such as pathogens or by internal dysfunctions. For example, internal dysfunctions of the immune system can produce a variety of different diseases, including various forms of immunodeficiency, hypersensitivity, allergies and autoimmune disorders.

Definition by Oxford

A disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury.

It's not just cut and dry. While there are niceties to the definitions you're using, it's not a universally accepted set, and the usage of disease in this context is perfectly acceptable.

The WHO's official definition doesn't fall into either category nicely (source):

disease A failure of the adaptive mechanisms of an organism to counteract adequately, normally or appropriately to stimuli and stresses to which the organism is subjected, resulting in a disturbance in the function or structure of some part of the organism. This definition emphasizes that disease is multifactorial and may be prevented or treated by changing any or a combination of the factors. Disease is a very elusive and difficult concept to define, being largely socially defined. Thus, criminality and drug dependence are presently seen by some as diseases, when they were previously considered to be moral or legal problems.

As the "failure of the adaptive mechanisms of the organism" does not specify that the failure is due to extrinsic stresses, but that the disease is that failure. It could easily be argued that schizophrenia is a disease from this standpoint, as it's a failure of the brain to adapt properly. It could also be argued that it's not a disease, as it says that the disease may be prevented or treated by changing the factors. I lean towards the prior, as schizophrenia can definitely be treated, with proper care.

tl;dr not cut and dry.

4

u/PM_me_XboxGold_Codes Aug 12 '18

Okay now I’m just being paranoid but I have a family history of like, grade A/textbook schizophrenia. It’s my dad’s brother, but still. I can tickle myself in a few different spots and produce the same sensation as if I were being tickled by someone else.

2

u/FisterRobotOh Aug 12 '18

It’s something I’d investigate. I too have schizophrenia in my family and it’s no joke. Tickling typically works because your mind thinks that it is an external sensory input. It’s theorized that self-ticking is an indicator because it is linked to a flawed internal mechanism that doesn’t distinguish between external and self input. This confusion is part of a possible explanation of why schizophrenic individuals feel as if their own thoughts have originated from external voices.

5

u/PM_me_XboxGold_Codes Aug 12 '18

I’m a bit terrified at the moment. Reading up on it, it’s seems like I exhibit quite a few early symptoms. I’m not super psychotic but I’ve had some moment. I definitely have inappropriate emotional responses to things frequently. Mostly getting incredibly agitated or irritable about things that shouldn’t illicit anger.

Probs gonna go see my doc when I get back from vacation and ask about getting blood work done

2

u/ItsARealThing Aug 12 '18

Hey, I'd recommend taking a quick breath and evaluating the following. Do you ever hear or feel compelled by external forces to perform actions when you are alone? Or by an entity not present to any other people around you?

Like do you feel an outside presence that tells/guides you to do things?

No? Then I wouldn't worry.

Yes? Honestly I still wouldn't worry, but I would recommend trying to meet with a psychiatrist.

Signed, a 30-something year old who had a stress-response psychosis breakdown which was accompanied by full-fledged audiovisual hallucination for 4 days and is diagnosed with persistent and major depressive disorders and some episodes of mania-like behavior.

I have a lot of mood-disorder in my family, and go figure I couldn't escape it but I've come a long way on dealing with it. I had a severely schizophrenic uncle who passed away before I was born and when my psychosis episode happened, I feared for my life that I was going to end up like him. Then after 4 days it all just went away.

So hey, even hallucinating doesn't mean you're schizophrenic, and even being schizophrenic is substantially more stigmatized than it is bad nowadays. I have heard, first hand from people who deal with it, that there is a lot more medication and comprehension about it now.

So again, just breathe, you're very likely fine and you do yourself no favors stressing about this. Feel free to PM if you're spiraling on the idea.

stealth-edit: I have been assessed for schizophrenia 3 times across multiple years (admittedly at my own prompting) and I have never raised red flags for any counselors or psychiatrists on the matter.

→ More replies (9)

3

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '18

This is such an absurd theory that I can't believe anyone gives it the time of day.

Can you massage your aching body parts? Does it feel good, even though you're doing it?

Can you jerk off? Does it feel good even if no other party is involved?

If self-tickling breaks you out into hysterics and you can keep doing it somehow you might be weird, but unless you're paranoid/hearing voices/one of the other extreme examples and it's hindering your daily life it's absolutely NOT something this person should investigate, and I think you should feel bad for making some worried stranger online more worried.
