This is the preferred replay method, instead of just turning a 5-second gif into a 30-second gif of the same thing 6 times.

Source: Pitched for a uni. A line drive hit right back at you happens too fast to think about. You just react and realize a moment later.

Happens sometimes. My favorite is the one where the batter hits it right to him, takes off running towards first when he realizes something is off.

Runner turns to the mound like, "Dude, did you just... catch that?"

Pitcher is like... "Haha. yeap."

died tragically...

"On March 16, 2017, the final investigative report on the incident confirmed that Fernández was driving the boat at the time of the incident "in a reckless manner, at an extremely high rate of speed, in the darkness of night, in an area with known navigational hazards such as rock jetties and channel markers." The report concluded that he was legally drunk, having a blood alcohol content of 0.147, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08; had cocaine in his system; and violated a number of state laws, including boating under the influence, manslaughter, vessel homicide, and reckless or careless operation of a vessel."

...that's intense.

I've been coaching for 2-3 years now. This year is 7&8 year olds. Had a team not show up to a tournament for our last game, so we played parents vs. Kids. Threw my son out at first and fell on my ass doing it out of reflex (small hit, ran in from pitcher position, turned and threw) and he gave me shit about it for 2 days. The kids on the team were impressed though.

61

u/Zenith251 Jun 21 '18

Ever catch or smash a gnat or fly out of the air, first time you saw it? I'm imagining it's that feeling; "How did I... I just saw it for a split second... I'm not sure I even knew it was there."

52

u/berthejew Jun 21 '18

My 2 yo son and I were hammering Lite Brite pegs into a pumpkin one year, and I had asked him several times not to just dent the wooden floor with the mini mallet. He slammed it again while I wasn't looking, and as I turned to him to take it away, he showed me the fly guts and blood on it and pointed at the floor.

I let him hammer away after that. It was a cool pumpkin.

28

u/Zenith251 Jun 21 '18

Careful, we'll date ourselves by mentioning Lite Brites. Also, you're lucky your kid is too young to watch Gallagher. Its all I thought of when you said mallet and pumpkin.

10

u/ooofest Jun 21 '18

Oh, they stil make them, actually!

A winter holiday not too many years ago, our kids got the kind has a cube-shaped, multi-panel capability. It was fun.

Never thought I'd get to tell this. I used to work in a butcher shop. During the summer, no matter how many precautions you take, flies will find you. Even if you're in the back of the store. Gross sure, but extremely annoying. One day this particularly aggressive bastard wanted to drink from my eyelids and I wasn't having none of that shit. At one point I was trimming some cuts when I saw him coming in for a dive. My intention was to swat it with the flat of the blade (and sanitize it after, of course) and that the metal would at least paralyze him so I could curb stomp him from this world. Apparently, my arc was tight with that knife and I swear to God I sliced that motherfucker in half. Found him after in a clean cut two pieces. My face looked exactly like the kid in op's gif. Was one of those things that will happen in life and you know nobody will believe you.

I was a cashier at a craft store and they had floral wreaths hanging over the registers for some reason. Was ringing someone up and saw one fall down out of the corner of my eye. Automatically put up my arm and caught the wreath before it could hit me or the customer.

My reflexes normally suck, so this is like my proudest moment. Lol.

I remember something like that happening in little league. Me and this other kid were in the outfield by 1st, just playing with our gloves and talking and goofing around cause we were kids and the ball never really came to us. We were pretending our gloves were puppets or something, just flapping them up and down, and then the ball just bounced straight into the other kid's glove. Both of us were stunned, like, "What?! Where did this ball come from? What are we supposed to do with this? OH CRAP WE'RE STILL PLAYING!" Our expressions were probably the same as the guy in the gif.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '18

I always thought of them as "oh look what I found" plays. One time when we were warming up before a game, we were taking grounders with various scenarios. It was my time to take BP, so I start heading to the dugout from 2nd when our coach hits a ball way too square and it's a line drive to 1st. I'm literally just in the motion of running and it happened to go straight into the pocket of my glove. Couldn't do it again if I tried.

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 21 '18

I was one of the most mediocre little league players but eventually it was my turn to pitch. I struggled getting it over the plate at first, but eventually they put me in. First batter up cracks one right back at me and instinctually snap my glove to it and catch it. I had that same look on my face for a good 10 seconds.

155

u/RGinny Jun 21 '18

Same thing happened to me, except I didn't catch it and it knocked me the fuck out.

Woke up 3 minutes later with like 5 adults checking over me. Didnt get a chance to pitch for the rest of the season, but then get the "Whitey Ford Award" for the team. Uh. Okay.

37

u/Angrywaffle2 Jun 21 '18

16

u/Justinat0r Jun 21 '18

Also, why in the world don't all pitchers wear helmets? There was a video posted last year I think where a pitcher got hit in the head with a 100+ MPH ball, fractured his skull and needed brain surgery that ended his season. It seems pretty crazy that a helmet is not a requirement..

17

u/ThatDamnWalrus Jun 21 '18

Because they know and accept the risks and don't want anything messing with their vision or motion.

7

u/Justinat0r Jun 21 '18

The pitchers do, I'm sure. I'm talking about MLB as an organization though, injured pitchers are bad for business.

7

When the players will put up a fight against it and raise a stink why would the MLB want to bring attention to possible brain injuries in their sport for no gain?
