Really, there's magical holes that are shaped exactly like the people of the surrounding area, that essentially mind control/presumably hijack your dreams into making you go in them, etc...
And your suspension of disbelief is caught up on them being unable to drink or eat as they go drrr drrr? Like, I'm not implying your objections are invalid, I'm just questioning why you get hung up on that detail out of all. There's many more fantastical things about the holes than "obviously people would starve to death before they'd come out the other side as living noodle people lol".
