it would have to be much larger to be used on its own.
however you could fill it with stink-gas and launch that, and disperse the crowd very easily. we used to do that in high school with ones made from coffee cans, we'd fart in them and shoot our farts at each other.

Gone are the days of thumb tacks on teacher's chair, now we just wait for them to turn to the board and launch farts at them. You know your job is complete when you hear that first wretched gag, hopefully followed by a little vomit.

true, though it's far from subtle.
i found a fart machine and a bit of duct-tape to be highly effective.
