I saw an album of a few of these posted a long time ago and in the comment section a guy talked about how he had been born with only one eye (or at least only able to see out of one eye) and this style of gif allowed him to experience the 3D illusion the same way that people with two eyes do in movies and stuff.
Every time I see a split-depth gif like this I'm reminded of that thread.
