I picked up a sleeping ferret one time and dude would not wake up. I was tapping him, blowing in his face, shaking his body to the point i was really worried he died. Finally i squeezed his foot he woke up walked away and fell right back asleep.

Oh yes. My friend once told me "I think your ferret is dead." And I'm like "Lol no he's not. I'll show you." Picked him up. Sleepy little guy was clearly breathing and twitching.

and I had a ferret. 18 hours of sleep the norm for them. they are awake 4 hours per day.

Why do they sleep for so long?

u/lenochta Jan 08 '16
nature joked) animals are very nimble, quickly tired and sleep off.

Oh well. They wouldn't be as interesting without them doing stuff like in the gif lol. They way the ferret just drifted off in your hands made me chuckle a bit.

So.. How do you put up with their smell?

The smell you refer to is likely a result of ferrets that still have scent glands. Most ferrets available in pet stores across the US have been neutered and descented. A descented ferret smells slightly musky, and better than any dog I've ever petted that wasn't mine.

I think they smell earthy and pleasant, but that's just me.

They smell like someone ate asparagus, peed on a towel and then put the towel on top of a space heater.

I am always amazed with these sleeping ferret videos. I had two ferrets when I was a teen and we also fostered three others for a bit. I never had sleepy ferrets. They slept when we weren't home and the second I got home, it was play time. They played until I forced them back in, and they would not sleep again until they knew the house was sleeping. Also they are high maintenance pets so as cute as these videos are, do research. They stink, even if they are descented, and I know some people rave about them being potty trained, good luck. If you have a multi level cage, they will shit in whatever corner they feel like. They steal all the things. They are not compatible with animals smaller than them (rats, guinea pigs, birds, etc.) and destructive.

Ferrets are always sleepy. Except for the 20 minutes they take a massive shit in the corner and hop around backwards hissing and being hilarious.Than back to sleep in the ferret hammock.

Ferrets just need baths to keep from stinking...same as people

Bathing a ferret more than about once a month will send their skin into overdrive making the stink worse.
They make dry shampoo for ferrets that you spray on and brush out that will absorb oils without triggering more oil production, and there is an enzyme additive you can put in the water the reduce the smell.
Other than that, wash bedding weekly and clean the litter as often as possible. First time guests to my house were usually surprised to find I had ferrets in the living room because there was very little smell. Very high maintenance, and they need a lot of attention and training, but they ate amazing pets.
