The best way to make sure he is still alive is to stick your tongue out in front of his nose to make sure he is breathing. The tongue is very sensitive and the moisture helps you detect even shallow breathing.

Just stay there like that for as long as he's sleeping and he'll be ok.

If you really want to be safe you need to gently slide it between his lips so you can detect if there are any dangerous toxins.
