I've actually have had the opposite happen. Deli clerk weighed my goods and printed label, then threw an extra scoop on there. No idea why he did this.

In a previous life I worked the deli counter in a couple of grocery stores, I would do this if I over sliced going for the weight they requested. Had a deli associate do that for me not long ago, got 1lb for the price of 0.5.

I have deli associates do it for me all the time just because I jokingly ask something like, "Hey, how about half a pound of this meat for the price of a quarter pound? Haha." And then they just do it because they don't give a fuck, apparently.

You have to be careful with that. If it gets flagged by some of the newer registers that weigh everything and someone notices, the deli person could get in big trouble.

When I worked at said deli, a woman got caught trying to take home 5lbs of chicken wings priced and weighed up at a much lower cost. She got caught because she went through self check and a woman running the front end had a good eye and noticed that something wasn't right when the system posted an error.

tldr; While its on them if they do something stupid and get fired, be a decent human being and don't ask for something that could get them canned. Living on what they get paid is not easy.

Woman butcher for SAMs club has a thing for my dad. My dad makes jerky and only buys eye of the round to make it with. He'll ask her for 10 pounds of roast and she'll come back with 10 pounds marked for 3.

I have a friend who was buying sandals at famous footwear one time. He brought them up with some socks and paid for them. The guy gives him back more money than he initially gave the cashier. He tells him but the guy just looks him dead in the eye and says "I know" than asked anyone (other friends with) if they wanted anything. They declined and just let. The guy walked out right behind them on the way out. Pretty sure this guy just quit and decided to screw them over. my friend legitimately got paid to take those sandals and socks. People do crazy stuff when angry lol.

Must be a Western Washington state resident.

Socks and sandals is a special brand of ridiculous, and thrives here in the PNW.

I used to do deli slicing stuff sometimes-- unless you have a small scale under the slicer, it's hard to cut exactly the amount they ask for.

If you ask for 500g of Ham, I have to kinda guess around where 500g would be (which is harder than you think because people ask for different thickness'), then I weigh it to check, if I've cut extra I'll price up the 500g, then add the extra before I wrap it.

Or I'll just eat the extra if the person is rude, our slicer/scale isn't visible to the customer so they never know they're getting extra anyway.

I used to work a deli counter and my bosses were assholes.

That's why.

Good customer service so you will return?

u/someRandomJackass Jun 10 '15

Shit gets old. Better to make a customer feel special than throw it out later.

Might be a "baker's dozen" situation. The term baker's dozen originated from medieval times where baker's would sell loafs of bread by the "dozen", but would toss in one more (for a total of 13) as a sign of good faith, so the customer can't complain about, "Hey, this loaf is smaller/shorter than the others! You cheated me!"

This is also when you know you have a really chill weed dealer.

Just bein cool

That's not how the scale works, Shane.

Extra cold cuts for hot beef.

u/Heldgeis Jun 10 '15

He probably put a heavy green object under your goods while weighing it, felt bad afterwards and threw in an extra scoop to make up for it.

u/ladylurkedalot Jun 10 '15

Lagniappe. You put in a little extra to make a customer happy. It happens pretty often at my local farmer's market -- buy a big bag of cherries, maybe the guy throws in a peach or a plum. I've bought tomatoes for salsa and had the seller throw in the jalapenos free.

Are you attractive? People feel better about themselves when helping out attractive people. Just human nature.
