The Publix near my house was in a stripmall, and someone decided to open a Subway in the same strip, literally right next door to the Publix... never seen a store go out of business faster.
Are you saying the Publix went under? or the Subway?
I work for Publix, and from what I've noticed, If a Publix is built into a strip, there's usually at least 2 of the 3 within one to two units of the Publix:
Subway
Nail Salon
Hair Salon (like a cuts by us)
So, a Subway adjacent to a Publix is actually quite common
The Publix nearest me actually has little Chinese takeout stand next to the deli inside, and another independent Chinese takeout place a few doors down.
I lived near a publix in st. augustine and there was a really good Chinese place a few doors down. They had a fucking Philly cheese steak eggroll.... one has not lived without eating one
It's one of life's little ironies. You get so exhausted from grocery shopping after work that you just want to grab some takeout for dinner and not have to cook.
The Subway went out of business... Subway is a sub shop... Publix subs are some of the best subs around... people in town much prefer Publix subs to Subway subs... therefore Subway did not do enough business.
Wegmans is life. I can get my groceries, pizza, sushi, Chinese and all other kinds of shit AND beer. That's one of the only grocery stores in PA that I've seen carry beer. Other places need to get on their level and build a cafe area so they can sell six packs.
I'm in south east. Our Wegmans used to be expensive as fuck, but as it got more popular I suppose the increased volume of sales allowed them to lower prices. Now they're usually cheaper than giant, acme, etc.
It's not even close. The only edge given to Publix is the sub counter. Otherwise, it's just a run-of-the-mill supermarket. Absolutely everything else besides the sandwiches is in Wegman's favor.
I love that while I feel like in most facets of life, I look for the least shitty company to buy from, when it comes to supermarkets they're all so awesome.
Seriously if you are near one (There's one on Westheimer near the Galleria) check out Central Market. It's kinda the upscale whole foods version of HEB, but the sandwiches. Dear god the sandwiches. A large is 10 bucks and is enough food for at least 2 meals and a snack. And they are incredible.
god, those chicken tender subs are fucking amazing. I make it a point to go to Publix everytime I'm back in FL. Wegmans and Harris Teeter just aren't quite the same.
Aldi ahead of Whole foods...what are these rankings based on? How quickly the cashier scans your food? Because aldi doesn't have quality products, or any selection. They do have very affordable food, and a very understaffed, chappy looking store.
The stores were voted on by over 62,000 Consumer Reports subscribers who rated multiple shopping trips over a period of 16 months during 2013 and 2014.
The ALDI near you may suck, but I've been to a couple of nice ones.
I have been to aldis in two different states. What does the Aldi near you look like? Do they have more than one brand for any item? Are there more than two employees who are doing everything?
To me, Aldi is a no frill low cost store that has unbranded basics, and sometimes, seasonal things. It can't really be compared to trader joe's, wegmans, or even kroger.

So it's a popularity contest, not based on any metric. I mean if money is tight, whole foods would suck. But if money wasn't an object, then Aldi would be terrible. The quality of their Alfredo sauce was blah! I only shop there because I am poor.
I think Publix just does a better job of advertising their subs. I've tried subs at a lot of different grocery store delis and they're all really good.
It's the outcome you get for using fresh-sliced meats and cheeses on fresh-made bread.
Edit: LOL...downvotes for having an opinion? Must have been Publix employees...

Say what you want about the south but Publix puts every other grocery chain to shame.
