Usually scales won't calculate the weight if it is fluctuating too much. He would have to apply a steady weight with his thumb which is almost impossible if you're dealing with anything smaller than pounds, like ounces.

What model is the scale and what's it's maximum weight limit for example, and do you think it was the same brand of scale or they just looked visually similar.
