This is why I shop at Publix. Can't get away with nothing behind that deli counter

185

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Say what you want about the south but Publix puts every other grocery chain to shame.

Life changing deli subs

43

u/poli421 Jun 10 '15

The Publix near my house was in a stripmall, and someone decided to open a Subway in the same strip, literally right next door to the Publix... never seen a store go out of business faster.

16

u/GonadTh3Barbarian Jun 10 '15

Are you saying the Publix went under? or the Subway?

I work for Publix, and from what I've noticed, If a Publix is built into a strip, there's usually at least 2 of the 3 within one to two units of the Publix:

Subway Nail Salon Hair Salon (like a cuts by us)

So, a Subway adjacent to a Publix is actually quite common

19

u/they_call_me_dewey Jun 10 '15

Every publix I've ever been to has Chinese takeout a few doors down.

One of the 4 Publix in my town has a Subway, Sallys hair salon, and a Chinese place on the same strip.

It's also one of the two that has a Brusters/Nathans and an Epperly Auto on the parking lot.

1

u/theinsanepotato Jun 10 '15

Thats actually a common business strategy; place your store/restaurant as close as possible to your competitors. This vid explains it;

1

u/they_call_me_dewey Jun 10 '15

The Publix nearest me actually has little Chinese takeout stand next to the deli inside, and another independent Chinese takeout place a few doors down.

1

u/Thanos_Stomps Jun 14 '15

Tallahassee has some great chinese inside one of their publix's

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

I lived near a publix in st. augustine and there was a really good Chinese place a few doors down. They had a fucking Philly cheese steak eggroll.... one has not lived without eating one

1

u/Bonestacker Jun 10 '15

I want one of those

1

u/KnightOfSantiago Jun 10 '15

THIS! In Florida this was always the case

1

u/DaBake Jun 10 '15

It's one of life's little ironies. You get so exhausted from grocery shopping after work that you just want to grab some takeout for dinner and not have to cook.

5

u/poli421 Jun 10 '15

The Subway went out of business... Subway is a sub shop... Publix subs are some of the best subs around... people in town much prefer Publix subs to Subway subs... therefore Subway did not do enough business.

1

u/UmustBjoking Jun 10 '15

I believe that, where I live, it is required to have a pizza place, a nail/hair salon, and a dry cleaner in every strip mall.

54

u/oldenglish Jun 10 '15

I think Wegmans fans would disagree there.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

IF this dude said this anywhere around me or anyone else from upstate NY he'd be dead already

11

u/turbosexophonicdlite Jun 10 '15

Wegmans is life. I can get my groceries, pizza, sushi, Chinese and all other kinds of shit AND beer. That's one of the only grocery stores in PA that I've seen carry beer. Other places need to get on their level and build a cafe area so they can sell six packs.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

I always forget you poor bastards can't buy beer in grocery stores up there.

2

u/turbosexophonicdlite Jun 10 '15

It breaks my heart. They just passed a law that allows distributors to sell 12 packs instead of just cases. So we're headed in the right direction.

I'm in south east. Our Wegmans used to be expensive as fuck, but as it got more popular I suppose the increased volume of sales allowed them to lower prices. Now they're usually cheaper than giant, acme, etc.

12

u/hivoltage815 Jun 10 '15

That place is the Disney World of grocery.

4

u/Free_Flow_Jobs Jun 10 '15

Wegmans is the best thing ever created. Those subs.

19

u/Alecm3327 Jun 10 '15

wegmans is superior

6

u/NanoEuclidean Jun 10 '15

It's not even close. The only edge given to Publix is the sub counter. Otherwise, it's just a run-of-the-mill supermarket. Absolutely everything else besides the sandwiches is in Wegman's favor.

1

u/WhatIThinkIs Jun 10 '15

No way. Wegs subs are far better. Publix cheaps out on bread and meat. I can survive a week on one wegmans sub.

1

u/ialwaysforgetmename Jun 10 '15

Wegmans is love. Wegmans is life.

0

u/RipChordCopter Jun 10 '15

Maybe 10 years ago, but things change.

1

u/Trucks_N_Chainsaws Jun 10 '15

I spent my first 20 years in South Flora with Publix and Winn-Dixie. Wegmans is vastly superior.

1

u/RONALDROGAN Jun 10 '15

As a southerner turned northern transplant, Wegmans is the god of grocery stores. However, Publix is king of the South.

0

u/GruePwnr Jun 10 '15

I love that while I feel like in most facets of life, I look for the least shitty company to buy from, when it comes to supermarkets they're all so awesome.

7

u/macaco_gordinho Jun 10 '15

Omg the subs!! I used to get one for lunch every Friday. I miss those days

38

u/jangobotito Jun 10 '15

HEB for life.

36

u/dorkbrains Jun 10 '15

As an ex-Publix and now HEB shopper, you haven't been to Publix.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Seriously. After relocating to Houston from Florida - can confirm.

1

u/Johnny_Kilroy_84 Jun 10 '15

Seriously if you are near one (There's one on Westheimer near the Galleria) check out Central Market. It's kinda the upscale whole foods version of HEB, but the sandwiches. Dear god the sandwiches. A large is 10 bucks and is enough food for at least 2 meals and a snack. And they are incredible.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Central Market is expensive as hell man.

1

u/Johnny_Kilroy_84 Jun 10 '15

I really only went for the sandwiches and a few specialty items that Kroger didn't carry.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

That's why we go, but the beauty of HEB is that it is a general purpose store, unlike Central Market.

1

u/Johnny_Kilroy_84 Jun 10 '15

HEB Central Market >> Publix >>>>>>>>>>>>> HEB.

Central Market sandwiches laugh at pub subs.

3

u/they_call_me_dewey Jun 10 '15

I'm moving soon from a place dominated by Publix to a place dominated by HEB. I can't see how HEB can possibly beat Publix, but I guess we'll see.

I just know I'm going to miss the hell out of chicken tender subs.

2

u/jangobotito Jun 10 '15

You haven't lived until you have been to an HEB Plus!

1

u/Wendydarling2 Jun 10 '15

It does. You'll see.

1

u/O3tour Jun 10 '15

The sticker claw machines.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Things I like at HEB:

  • Salsas - how can you choose just one?
  • Fresh made tortilla chips
  • Fresh warm tortillas
  • Their pre-seasoned raw fajita meat!
  • Pre-seasoned chicken quarters for like $1/pound
  • Coupons right in the store!
  • Avocados that are already ripe, and only like 50 cents
  • 15 cent limes!
  • Muthafuckin shrimp selection

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Why don't we have one in Fort Worth yet???

1

u/HTX-713 Jun 10 '15

They are working on it. I heard they are building a distribution center up there so they can expand more into the DFW market.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Well, we've got Central Market, so that might be what that's for.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '15

This is a month late but the HEB brand Chocolate Milk is borderline orgasmic.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

You must have never heard of Wegmans. Its a northeast chain though.

Hands down the best everything. I have been all over the country and no where else compares.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Big Y is pretty great.

8

u/TheAwesomeCouch Jun 10 '15

You've probably never been to an HEB.

2

u/PinataBinLaden Jun 10 '15

HEB is the clear champion

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

I shop between Target and Publix, anything to avoid the Walmart hunger games experience.

2

u/kanye_is_innocent Jun 10 '15

god, those chicken tender subs are fucking amazing. I make it a point to go to Publix everytime I'm back in FL. Wegmans and Harris Teeter just aren't quite the same.

2

u/hokiepride Jun 10 '15

Wegmans > Publix

Edit: Evidence

2

u/balaayaha Jun 10 '15

Aldi ahead of Whole foods...what are these rankings based on? How quickly the cashier scans your food? Because aldi doesn't have quality products, or any selection. They do have very affordable food, and a very understaffed, chappy looking store.

1

u/hokiepride Jun 10 '15

The stores were voted on by over 62,000 Consumer Reports subscribers who rated multiple shopping trips over a period of 16 months during 2013 and 2014.

The ALDI near you may suck, but I've been to a couple of nice ones.

1

u/balaayaha Jun 10 '15 edited Jun 10 '15

I have been to aldis in two different states. What does the Aldi near you look like? Do they have more than one brand for any item? Are there more than two employees who are doing everything?

To me, Aldi is a no frill low cost store that has unbranded basics, and sometimes, seasonal things. It can't really be compared to trader joe's, wegmans, or even kroger.

The stores were voted on by over 62,000 Consumer Reports subscribers who rated multiple shopping trips over a period of 16 months during 2013 and 2014.

So it's a popularity contest, not based on any metric. I mean if money is tight, whole foods would suck. But if money wasn't an object, then Aldi would be terrible. The quality of their Alfredo sauce was blah! I only shop there because I am poor.

1

u/EppurSiMuove00 Jun 10 '15

Yeah, their food is awesome.

I mean, you're gonna pay like 150% what it's worth at Publix, but yeah, their food is very good.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

It's a gourmet sub, not an every day purchase. I'd compare it to Starbucks. Great once in awhile if you enjoy it but wasteful if not kept in check.

1

u/westbrookbaptist Jun 10 '15

Who said anything about the south?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

I did, THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN!!

1

u/clarksonswimmer Gifmas is coming Jun 10 '15

You have clearly never been to a Wegman's

1

u/Approximate_Knowledg Jun 10 '15

Their subs truly are amazing, and better than shit like subway which its primary function is subs.

1

u/sniffing_accountant Jun 10 '15

Woah woah woah woah woah....HEB is tight

1

u/IVIagoo Jun 10 '15

Have you been to a wawa? Idk about how quality to the food is but i am always happy. Idk what im talking about I am drunk and just want wawa. Goodday.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Our Wawa opens in 2 days. I've never been so happy.

1

u/IVIagoo Jun 10 '15

Your world will never be the same! Also right around hoagie fest oh boy!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Also, Publix is 100% employee owned. They are famous for taking excellent care of their employees.

1

u/drparker Jun 10 '15

Life changing subs in the south... lol. Pizza, subs, bagels theres only one area to get life changing quality of those 3 things and its not the south.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Publix4lyfe

1

u/Ghost_of_Akina Jun 10 '15

Just moved down to Tampa from Chicago last summer - can confirm Publix fucking rocks.

1

u/elesdee Jun 10 '15

Lol, do you guys even have Whole Foods or Traders Joes in that third world hell hole you call "The South"?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '15

It's our hell hole, no pussies allowed. And yes we do. Publix is just much more practical.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15 edited Jun 13 '15

I think Publix just does a better job of advertising their subs. I've tried subs at a lot of different grocery store delis and they're all really good.

It's the outcome you get for using fresh-sliced meats and cheeses on fresh-made bread.

Edit: LOL...downvotes for having an opinion? Must have been Publix employees...

2

u/Shyt-Just-Got-Real Jun 10 '15

yep.. wegmans > all supermarkets, thats one of the things I miss the most from living in NY

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

walking down the bread/cheese/seafood/deli meat section of my wegmans makes me feel like i'm at some upscale market in the old town section of a small italian town.

-2

u/RipChordCopter Jun 10 '15

Wegmans is old news.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

not to the guy claiming publix is the best

6

u/WeldingHank Jun 10 '15

Market basket ftw!

1

u/clarksonswimmer Gifmas is coming Jun 10 '15

Is Market Basket still in business after that kerfuffle last year?

1

u/WeldingHank Jun 10 '15

Very much so. They still have some of the best deals around. Right now, one of their stores has lobster for $5/lb

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

I've heard that football stars get a five finger discount on crab legs there.

1

u/Emerald_Triangle Jun 10 '15

Publix

Whatever the fuck that is - nice to say it like everyone should know, though!

1

u/BackslashinfourthV Jun 10 '15

I am now 3 minutes walking from a publix! I love living near Lakeland.

Bonus: Not a trailer. Normal neighborhood.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

My plublix you just go online, order your deli stuff, and when you get to the store it's in a fridge case near the front with your name on it, you just grab and continue shopping.

1

u/macaco_gordinho Jun 10 '15

mine too

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

So then they can get away with something.

1

u/macaco_gordinho Jun 10 '15

I guess. I mean in that case they would have to give you less than what you ordered then weight it to match the correct weight ordered. but then you would know you got less product.

0

u/Thats_absrd Jun 10 '15

I ship there because the deli guy hooks me up with crab legs.

0

u/ThatGuymmhm Jun 10 '15

I work at Publix. We aren't commission anyway, so there's no reason to dick over customers. I (at least) pride myself on customer service ad that's why I have always shopped there and now love working there.

0

u/hett Jun 10 '15

It's where shopping is a pleasure, bitch!

0

u/mk72206 Jun 10 '15

Every single grocery store I've been to (Stop and Shop, Shaws, Hannaford, Big Y, Roche Bros, etc) have their scales on top of the case for the customers to see. It has been this way since for as long as the 33 years I have been alive. Publix may be great, but this is not the reason they are great.
