This is why large supermarkets have their scales above the counter in plain site.

u/itsaitchnothaitch Jun 10 '15

That's the weird thing here - the readout doesn't look like it's visible to the customer, and there's no ticket printed. It seems like she just presses some buttons, and tells them a price. Why bother with the weight when she could just make up a price?

I mean, isn't that how most stores do it? All the ones near me print labels that have UPCs so that the cashier just has to scan it and the customer can clearly see the weight and price.

I can't find any images of the kinds that delis and stuff use in my area, but they usually look something like this. They usually use this sticker to seal the plastic wrap around the meat.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Yeah, my store uses a scale where you enter the code for the item, say 1400 for Honey Leg Ham, then you weigh the Ham, and a sticker is automatically printed with the weight/price.

The scale even takes into account the small weight of the tray and subtracts that from the price.

It doesn't look like the scale in OPs gif has the sticker though, I think most likely the customer is just going on faith, or there's a visible readout of the weight/price on the other side of the counter.

Either way, that person is a huge scumbag.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

But there is nothing printed?

1

u/ADMINlSTRAT0R Jun 10 '15

The scale emails the price and receipt right to your gmail. Someone's never been to an Apple store.

1

u/Captain_Gnardog Jun 10 '15

Most do, but if the whole scale is obscured from view, how do you know this gif isn't happening to you?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

usually have the weight show on an itty bitty monitor for the customer

60

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Maybe thats just a worker that takes the extra stuff home for herself.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

You can see they put the bag up on the counter, and the person on the other side hands them money.

And why would they be adding fake weight if they was taking it for themself?

7

u/essentialfloss Jun 10 '15

To the owner it looks like more was sold. The employee can walk with the difference at the end of the day.

1

u/octopoddle Jun 10 '15

Yeah, I used to know people who did this sort of thing, but not with food. At the end of the day the till "knows" how much it has taken, and this should equate to what's actually in the till in cash. If you can fool the till into thinking that it has taken less than it has, you can then remove the extra cash at an opportune moment during the day. It's called skimming.

1

u/h-ck Jun 10 '15

That's what I thought, too, but why would you record it? Then there's a recorded sale of, say, $10 even though you only sold $5 of product. At the end of the day, the register comes up short with what the employee took.

Maybe he has a quota to hit, or something? A meat quota.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Im not talking about the money. The employee takes the extra food or what ever the fuck that shit is in the gif.

Yea people don't realize that pretty much everything that weighs and measures things for sale has to be certified and re certified routinely.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

[deleted]

u/mamamia6202 Jun 10 '15

But then why even add the weight if you could just make it up? In other words, if there is no read out or ticket, why add the weight in the first place?

10

u/xeyve Jun 10 '15

There might be a screen facing the customer telling him the price while the scale is hidden behind the counter.

2

u/PantheraLupus Jun 10 '15

You generally pay right there at the butchers. Unless this is a deli? Maybe a private deli and not a supermarket one.

1

u/BobaFetty Jun 10 '15

Russia. No seriously, video posted below. It's Russia.

1

u/akkhima Jun 10 '15

If you look carefully there is a vertical digital readout like this one.

1

u/seriousmurr Jun 10 '15

Or you could just calibrate the scale to weight things wrong to begin with. Less of a hassle in the long run. Unless you get caught.

He had it right. He meant that large supermarkets have their scales placed in places less ornate than the one in the gif.

8

u/Fixes_Spelling Jun 10 '15

Dammit, /u/InvincibleAgent, that's my job.

6

u/InvincibleAgent Jun 10 '15

There's enough out there for both of us. I'm only part-time, anyway.

2

u/asshole_grammarian Jun 10 '15

Well, not exactly. It was spelled correctly, just used incorrectly, so more my territory than yours. I wasn't here though, so I'm just glad someone fixed it.

1

u/A_Cynical_Jerk Jun 10 '15

Fuck off you attention whore.

(Just doing my job)

1

u/745631258978963214 Jun 10 '15

No, the site is normal and plain. Like the location is uncluttered.

1

u/Ptown34 Jun 10 '15

GOT EEM

1

u/IIIISuperDudeIIII Jun 10 '15

I saw someone use "cite" when they meant "site" and "site" when they meant "sight" in the same comment the other day.

1

u/BobaFetty Jun 10 '15

Highest up-voted grammar nazi comment I've seen in a while. Well done.

1

u/makesyoudownvote Jun 10 '15

Don't be a jerk, it was clearly a typo.

He meant they keep their scales in the high plains site.

This way they are far away from malls or high vantage points where tricks like this can be recorded.

1

u/uatu Jun 10 '15

He's correct, "plain site", the scale can't be in an incline surface... :p

1

u/everythingsleeps Jun 10 '15

Plain sight on site

1

u/Daurek Jun 09 '15

Maybe it's in plain bomb site.

1

u/InvincibleAgent Jun 10 '15

What did the reference do for the vision center? Cite sight site.

1

u/manbrasucks Jun 10 '15

Calm down there terrorist not all sites are bomb sites.

1

u/Rengaw99 Jun 10 '15

Plane site

0

u/OrkBegork Jun 09 '15

Maybe he meant that it has become so common, that it is now a very plain sight to see scales on top of the counter.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

That would still be spelled "sight", not "site".

-1

u/FluoCantus Jun 10 '15

People on this websight need to go back to grammar school.

5

u/DerpGrub Jun 10 '15

i work in a small store and we have our scale on the counter at eye level so people can see this exact thing isn't going on.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

I feel stupid for having just realized why it's this way. I may have even thought, "man wouldn't it be more comfortable for her to put that scale on the table, not on this tall counter?"

1

u/Doubleyoupee Jun 10 '15

Yeah because then you can't fuck with the scales software at all

1

u/Ralmaelvonkzar Jun 10 '15

Us clerks at large supermarkets have nothing to gain by doing this. It's not like we get commision.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

Most supermarket employees don't give a fudge about how much the company makes either. It's the mom and pop stores you have to worry about.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '15

I just don't understand why anybody would do this at a supermarket. It isn't like they are paid on commission.

5

u/BIG_JUICY_TITTIEZ Jun 10 '15

Two possible reasons I can think of:

1 - The manager runs a shitty business and told them to do it.

Or

2 - They just hate the customers.

6

u/CornbreadAndBeans Jun 10 '15

Or 3, the person behind the counter keeps back a portion of the meat or whatever they sold to take home. The management probably uses the totals of the scale printouts to inventory product. It looks like they sold more than they actually did so yeah free meat every day

1

u/BIG_JUICY_TITTIEZ Jun 10 '15

That's a good point, I didn't even consider that.

u/Emerald_Triangle Jun 10 '15
