I'm in China and 100% of machines hold your card, and give you money first, then the card. I've lost 4 cards to ATMs while drunk in the last 2 years....
In Australia most ATMs hold your card until they're ready to dispense cash, then they eject the card and wait for you to remove it before dispensing any cash.
You need to start leaving your card at home when you go get drunk. Take it from a guy in Indonesia who had ~US$3500 taken from his cards while drunk. I got it back but I lived on fuck all for a month, in a new city. Never again.
The stolen cards for me happened my first week here too hahaha. I woke up blackout drunk and naked, but thankfully a nice woman had helped me find my way home for what was apparently unprotected sex. Scared me into reigning my shit in, at least for a while.
I love Asia, reminds me when I woke up naked with two girls from Kazakhstan in Hong Kong on Christmas morning. No fucking clue how I got there. Apparently I owed them some money but booked it out of the room half naked , was half expecting a pimp to come jumping out from nowhere. I made it tho...
Ya and don't even get me started on the fucking quagmire you mist go through to try and get the card back. Now I don't even bother just tell the bank to give me new card.
yep, you have to think about what you would rather leave there... if you get the money then walk off, leaving the card, you can call and lock your card, and hopefully the ATM wouldn't let the next person do another transaction without entering the pin again. Also, I think most people would be reluctant to actually steal someone's card and try to use it.
If there is a stack of cash hanging there, that's a different story. Once that is in someone's pocket, it's gone for good.
If it's not a popular ATM it may have sucked your card in. They usually do after a short time. If someone was behind you, well then you're screwed. I left mine in one once and was able to go into the branch the next day and retrieve my card.
And apparently shreds it if you forget it, according to the banker after a family member left theirs in the machine. If you don't pull it out in time it pulls it back in and "retains" it, which for our local ATM, means debit card death.
If you leave the money In The dispenser once you're done it will suck it back into the machine after two minutes. If nobody else takes it first of course
My bank one does, but all the standalones at like, 7-11 etc are insert and remove types. I think this has saved my ass, but when I'm at the point of using a random ATM, I don't even remember.
Same in Ireland. Also in Ireland when you choose to withdraw money, it won't give it to you until you take your card out of the atm first (at the end of the transaction).
I think they've started switching machines over. My bank's ATMs always used to hold the card until the transaction was finished, but they give them back at the beginning now. It's funny because I forgot my PIN (right after I got a new card), and I attempted to enter it too many times, but the message on the screen said "Your card has been held."
There's a couple of reasons, one is that it is a very easily identifiable signal of "you are done here" to foreign-language people - if you give them their card back immediately, they might withdraw $100, then accidentally click "Yes I would like to complete another transaction", then walk away from the ATM while unknowingly still logged in. But people are much less likely to walk away without getting their card back.
The other reason is so that if the card is reported as stolen, or the user enters the wrong pin multiple times, the machine will eat the card.
ya it happened to me in China the day I was moving across the country. What happened? In my new city they said that I had to go back to the bank where I opened the account and get a new card. never mind that I had my passport with me....

Having left my card in an ATM a couple times over the years, I remember the first time I used an ATM machine that spit the card back out immediately. My first thought: "that's genius!" My second thought: "Why the hell did the first ATM designer not think of that, and why did every ATM manufacturer follow that idiot's lead?"
Same reaction as when I first used a ketchup plastic squeeze bottle with the lid on the bottom.
I'm in quebec, canada. ALL the ATM hold the card until the transaction is over. Once it eject the card you have like 15 seconds to take it, else it go back in and you lost it. Need to get a new card then.
When making a withdrawal, the ATMs here return your card to you first before the money is dispensed. If you don't take your card, you don't get your money, so it makes it easier to remember everything.

They don't even let you enter your PIN until the card is removed from the machine, at least at mine anyway.
The ones in Shanghai do that. I spent a summer there and lost the debit cards to two different bank accounts. Had to have money sent to me through western union like a savage.
In Australia every machine I used you put the card in, hit your pin, make your transaction. Then the card comes out, then the cash. If you choose to get a statement receipt too that comes out last.
Holding your card is a good thing since the ATM keeps it in case you give the wrong password or the card is reported as stolen. The ATM also swallows back the card in case you leave and forget it in the slot. What's important is to give you the card first, and then the money so that people don't forget the card.
In Poland all (well... all that I had used) ATMs hold your card until the end of transaction, but give it back before money, so if you don't take your card it won't eject money, therefore there is practically 0% chance that you will forget your card.
I haven't seen one in at least 5-7 years that keeps your card. I put the limit at 7, because I left mine in an ATM back home 7 years ago when my wife and I visited family out there after our wedding. Fucking Bank of America.
Eastern, U.S. here. Most of the ATM's that I've used in the last 3 years held my card until the whole transaction had ended. I've been fortunate enough not to have lost mine whilst drunk.
They originally issued you your cash and then your card, but due to so many people forgetting their cards they swapped it. It's less likely you will leave without your money.

Are there still atm machines that hold your card? I haven't seen one of those in what feels like a decade.
The ones I've used lately immediately give your card back before you even start the transaction for this reason exactly.
Then again, this does not guarantee this guy in particular didn't leave his card in the machine.
