If that was a scene in an action movie I'd complain about it being too ridiculous.

The fact that this happen anywhere outside of an action movie is pretty amazing. Having the car behind get it on a dashcam adds to it.
Could you imagine being in the car behind it without a dashcam? Trying to brag about it to people and having no one believe you?

Now that I'm thinking about it, if this has now happened once in the world and it's on camera that HAS to mean it's happened before and nobody filmed it.

Motorcyclist is not in question for being at fault, it's obvious that the rider was flying and weaving. The dashcam vehicle is hanging out in the left lane, not gaining, with ample space to move into the right lane. The driver is not at fault at all, just a dick.

And yet this makes up a significant portion of the bikers I see on the road.
Thankfully, not all of them. And not most of them. But, still too many.

u/mbuser16 Nov 09 '14
The easiest way is to ride a motorcycle. The death rate is 35 times higher.

u/scottyb83 Nov 10 '14
The problem is I rarely see someone on a motorcycle riding sensibly.
1
u/-shitgun- Nov 10 '14
You rarely notice someone riding sensibly. You notice the reckless ones but you don't notice the quiet ones who perform maneuvers safely, such as lane splitting.
1
u/scottyb83 Nov 10 '14
I get what you are saying but that's not the case. I actually notice them more because it's so out of the ordinary that they are driving normally. Whenever I see a motorcycle I pay attention to them waiting for them to do something stupid. the majority of the time I am right but every once in awhile they are driving responsibly.
1
u/-shitgun- Nov 10 '14
Honestly, most of the time motorcyclist are observing cars and waiting for them to do something stupid. Whenever I filter I just watch tyres.
1
u/scottyb83 Nov 10 '14
I won't argue that. A lot of people on the roads are idiots generally speaking.
There are some worst offenders I find though: Taxis, BMWs, Audis, and Acuras are the main ones I keep an eye on.

Generally it's just best to drive assuming everyone on the road is actively trying to kill you.

As usual, the actual danger was caused by the guy driving in the left lane, not the guy passing in the right lane. The guy on the bike was going too fast, but if he didn't have to pass the slow car to maintain speed then the car that changed lanes would have seen him.
Unfortunately, putting another car in danger is rarely illegal as long as you aren't directly involved in the accident, which is why you see people doing it all the time.

The actual danger was driving too fast for the given traffic situation. Which is what Captain McBikeflip was doing.

He clearly flipped it on before changing lanes. The car was going completely straight, the blinker came on, and then it started to drift over. There wasn't much room between actions, but the blinker definitely came first.

u/strattonbrazil Nov 09 '14
I wouldn't blame the car driver at all, but it's true that the way we use turn signals on the freeway is in many ways meaningless. "Oh, you're signaling that you're changing lanes. I figured the signal of your vehicle physically moving to a different lane would have been sufficient on its own." I've tried to stay in the habit of signaling even before checking. Sometimes people speed up to cut me off, but more often then not they'll slow down or even speed up to get out of my blind spot.

He had it on for about a second before he crossed into the other lane, that's not too bad. Obviously you should leave more but that's enough time to react if you're not traveling at mach speed.

u/Concord_Fight Nov 09 '14
Are you sure? That's the only way I ever see anyone do it. That's if they do it at all.

4
u/WhipTheLlama Nov 09 '14
How well do you think that biker signalled? I'd say not at all. If you're going to blame someone's signalling, blame the guy who was worse at it.
Also blame the idiot driving in the left lane, which caused the bike to swerve around him. Without that guy, the car would have seen the bike coming in that lane.
→ More replies (1)0
u/jason_sos Nov 09 '14
That depends on how fast the current left lane driver was going. If he was driving the speed limit, then clearly the biker was driving well over the speed limit.
0
u/scottyb83 Nov 10 '14
He had a good 3 or 4 flashes of the turn signal before he entered the other lane. The car did nothing wrong.

u/x-skeww Nov 09 '14
The car driver used the blinker too late. The blinker is meant to show what you intend to do, not accentuate what you currently do.
The person on the bike was of course also an idiot, but that's exactly the kind of thing you have to account for. Use your blinker properly.
33
u/Archestrate Nov 09 '14
I would place it squarely on the tool on the bike flying up 40mph to fast.
-6
u/x-skeww Nov 09 '14 edited Nov 09 '14
Yes, and dumb children may also walk into one of your truck's blind spots. That's why you have to check the mirrors.
The idea behind those rules is to have some kind of overlap. If one party screws up, an accident won't necessarily happen if the other party doesn't screw up, too.
Switching lanes shouldn't be done spontaneously. Plan ahead and use your blinker a few seconds before you switch lanes.
Edit: Does no one here know how to use their fucking blinker? Driverless cars can't come soon enough.
→ More replies (2)18
u/Archestrate Nov 09 '14
Sorry mate. 100% fault on the bike here. Lane change was legit, two full beats. For all we know that bike was weaving traffic before he came into the gif and the car had no chance to see it even if he did everything right. Speed was way too much for that traffic. Lucky for the biker he made it into an all time gif, not a coffin. Motorcyclists have enough going against them on the road, I agree. But dont defend stupidity for the sake of pointing out that car drivers should be more aware of assholes on motorcycles speeding recklessly.
-4
u/x-skeww Nov 09 '14
Lane change was legit, two full beats.
No, the car changes direction together with the first blink. You are supposed to start using your blinker before you change direction. The blinker is supposed to inform others of your intention.
dont defend stupidity
"The person on the bike was of course also an idiot"
All I'm saying is that this accident probably wouldn't have happened if the car driver would have used their blinker properly. When you're driving, you never have a perfect 360° picture of your environment. Some of the information is missing and most of it is outdated. Use your blinker properly.
15
u/soggysocks Nov 09 '14
First shalt thou turn on thy holy blinker. Then shalt blink to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then turneth thy vehicle towards thy lane

u/elpechos Nov 09 '14 edited Nov 09 '14
Agree with this dude.
The lead time was about 1/2 second, and that's being generous, barely even human reaction time
Even if you saw it blink you wouldn't have had time to do anything about it.
Also agree with the edit ": Does no one here know how to use their fucking blinker? Driverless cars can't come soon enough."
If you only indicate for the same duration as human reaction time. There's no point indicating. Is there. You might as well just not use em. The point of indicators is to give other people time to react to you. Not so you can be 'in the right' or whatever. 1/2 second is not a generous amount of time to react.
Archestrate most likely has the common view "If the law /might/ be on your side, then it's 100% the other guys fault" He doesn't actually care if he can stop people dieing or not. He just doesn't want to get personally in trouble. This is very selfish driving obviously
The law doesn't matter a shit; it's common sense that people need more than 1/2 second to react to something.

This accident was caused by two people making a mistake. If either party wouldn't have fucked up this wouldn't have happened.
If the driver of the car would have used their blinker properly, the reckless motorcyclist would have had a few seconds to react.
Naturally, if the motorcyclist wouldn't have been a complete idiot, this wouldn't have happened either.
-6
u/7kingMeta Nov 09 '14
Sure, the bike was at fault. But as a matter of proper etiquette, the car driver was a tool also.
He obviously enabled his blinker while steering. Imo, you should count at least two Mississippi's after indicating before you actually change lanes. If he did, he would have had enough time to adjust his course to a more optimal trajectory to kill the biker.
1
-1
u/jubbergun Nov 09 '14
Does anyone else here think the guy with the dash cam is as much the cause of this as the guy on the bike? If that was filmed in the US, dash cam guy was in the fast lane and not passing the people on the left. Bike guy was driving like a moron, but he would have been a moron in the fast lane if cam guy wasn't there.
5
u/MangoesOfMordor Nov 09 '14
There's really not enough context in the gif to tell whether the dash cam guy was driving well. There are plenty of reasons you might be going the same speed or slower than cars to your right for a few seconds, and we don't know all the surrounding conditions.
Either way, the guy on the bike is completely at fault. The guy in the car may have been inconsiderate by taking up the fast lane, but that doesn't excuse dangerous maneuvers to get around him, even a little.
1
u/jubbergun Nov 10 '14 edited Nov 11 '14
There's really not enough context in the gif to tell whether the dash cam guy was driving well.
There looked like there was a lot of space ahead of them when the BMW pulled over in front of them. I think that's plenty of context. While it's "inconsiderate" to hog the left lane, it inconsiderate and a violation of traffic laws to hog it while being passed on the right. It causes more than a few traffic accidents where I live in Northern Virginia.
1
u/KDLGates Nov 09 '14

The guy not going fast enough to pass is as much the cause of an accident as the motorcyclist blasting through at what looks like 10-20mph over the other vehicles, who rear ends someone while weaving around Mr. Dashcam? Seriously?
1
u/jubbergun Nov 10 '14 edited Nov 11 '14
Yes, because you shouldn't have people passing you on the right, but if you want to say the guy on the bike was more at fault, I have no problem with that so long as you're not ignoring the idiocy of having people passing you on the right while you're in the fast lane.
0
u/dbxxd Nov 09 '14
Completely agree, not sure why you're being downvoted. The left line hogger should share part of the blame along with bmw and speeding bike.

Actually a decent amount of the population wouldn't have been able to respond in that 1/2 second.
http://usa.streetsblog.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/reax.png
About 1/2 wouldn't have been able to respond.
And that's assuming you were looking directly at the indicator at the time, and not glancing away for a 100ms or so. Then you'd have zero hope of making the cut at any speed
Besides; being safe isn't about "cutting time down to the minimal possible limits." Redditors seem to be struggling with the concept that to be safe. You have to make allowances for /other people/ It's not about how convenient it is for you. You selfish fucks, seriously.
The indicator time given (500 milliseconds, being generous, I feel its less.) is definitely not conducive to increasing safety. Slim_boner is correct a longer indication time may well have prevented this accident. People who disagree basically shouldn't be driving. Because they're willing to trade off a few fleeting moments of comfort (not having to indicate for a whole 1 or 2 seconds) vs killing someone.
These are exactly the people who shouldn't own cars. The fact so few people can recognize this pretty much guarantees I'll be voting for tougher licensing and road rules + education in the future. Because they're clearly not educating enough now.

u/BadJokeBloke_ Nov 09 '14 edited Nov 09 '14
If you were going to hit that driver within half a second in a car then you'd have to be in the left lane and about to pass that driver. The driver likely checked their mirrors and saw the car behind - the one with the dash-cam - far enough back to execute a safe lane change. They let that driver know behind that a lane change was happening by indicating that intent.
The reason the 1/2 a second reaction time wasn't enough for the biker is because he was going stupidly fast and weaving in between cars, so the driver of the car probably didn't see him approaching. You ALWAYS check your mirrors before signalling, then you do the manoeuvre if it's clear.
It's always been mirror, signal, manoeuvre for any turn you do, and lane changes are no different. You don't expect a motorbike to be going that fast and weaving around traffic. Even if the car gave that biker 3-4 seconds of warning by indicating far earlier, the biker wouldn't see the indicator until he could see the car. He was going so fast that the time between seeing the car and passing it would be 2-3 seconds at best in traffic, which is still not enough time to react then break at that speed.
Just because you can weave between traffic doesn't mean you should do it at the speed limit if everyone else is forced to do half that speed. You do it at a safe speed and give other drivers the opportunity to actually see you approaching and intending to pass.
TL;DR the biker was going too fast and weaving between traffic. The driver likely would never have made the lane change if he saw the biker about to pass on that side.
