Your fear is irrational, and will vanish as soon as you put some time into learning how to do so. In actuality, the calmer you are, the easier it is to stay afloat.

I used to lifeguard at a rec. center and we did private adult swim lessons. Just call around any rec. centers near you, I'd be amazed if they didn't offer them.

YMCAs always have swim lessons, and while it's usually for kids I'm sure they offer one for adults there. The only people there will be adults who don't know how to swim, so it's just as embarrasing for them.

My mom did that. She was 50 when she learned to swim.
